Mitt Romney Didn?t Want To Be President Anyway, You Jerks

Romney and Ann aboard the SeawardWhatever, being president is dumb. Who would want that anyway? I?m glad I didn?t get to be president. I?m going home. And give me my basketball back!

These are the thoughts of one Willard Romney, per his son of equally silly name, Taggert, who told the Boston Globe that, like, whatever man, Dad didn?t even want that stupid job, and that he didn?t even really want it during the campaign, either.

Believe it, folks: The man who ran for president ? twice ? didn?t actually want to be president.

?He wanted to be president less than anyone I?ve met in my life. He had no desire to . . . run,? said Tagg, who worked with his mother, Ann, to persuade his father to seek the presidency. ?If he could have found someone else to take his place . . . he would have been ecstatic to step aside??

While it?s unlikely Romney has ever been ?ecstatic? about anything, it?s interesting to find out that he felt the same way about running for president as most dads feel about going to dance recitals.

And what?s this about finding someone to take his place? There were nine candidates at the Orlando debate. Dude wasn?t ?stepping aside.?

But encouraging a (second) run for president wasn?t the only contribution Tagg made: In addition to saying he wanted to clobber the president of the United States, he ?drew up a list of 12 people whose lives had been helped by his father in ways that were publicly unknown but had been deeply personal and significant, such as assisting a dying teenager in writing a will or quietly helping families in financial need.?

This idea was eventually implemented, and it was very creepy. If ?People getting a glimpse at who he is as a person? is a liability for a candidate, maybe that person isn?t so great of a candidate. Jeez, even Nixon had that whole Checkers thing, but Nixon probably didn?t want to run for president, just like Mitt Romney, who helped out so many families, sometimes maybe by telling single mothers they are disgraces and should not keep their children.

Oh well. He didn?t want the job anyway.

Revival in the offing for NCR - Real Estate India

??|?? December 30, 2012 ?? 03:44pm ??|Contributed by manoja

Rohit Chaudhary, a software engineer working in Noida, bought a three-bedroom flat on the Greater Noida Expressway a couple of years back. For the last four months, he has been trying to sell it to meet a financial exigency. Despite trying his level best, he has not been able to find a buyer with a reasonable offer for his property.

Rohit is one of the many middle-income buyers who have invested in the real estate sector over the last three years, either in the form of land or flats around the National Capital Region, which, apart from Delhi, include Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

A sharp spurt in buyers targeting these areas had in the recent years pushed up the property prices, ultimately tapering off demand forthe area.

One of the major reasons for the fall in demand for property in these markets is the very high property rates prevalent in these areas forcing people to stay away from these properties expecting the prices in the area to correct. Also, there has been a lot of confusion of land acquisition in these areas adding to buying disinterest,? said RV Verma, chairman and managing director of National Housing Bank.

A Crisil report on real estate companies released on Friday also says that subdued demand, high construction costs and high interest rates have dented the earnings and return ratios of real estate companies in India over the past two years but projects a revival in the next financial year.

Crisil?s analysis of 23 listed real estate companies highlights that earnings declined 21 per cent and 9 per cent y-o-y in FY12 and H1FY13, respectively, RoEs declined from 7.7 per cent in FY10 to 4.7 per cent in H1FY13. The agency blamed subdued demand and high construction costs on top of a high interest cost regime as the reasons behind the soft revenues and margins.

Revival

Some early signs of the decline in demand had started showing up early in 2012. Offtake of flats in the middle-income group segment (flats in the below Rs 60 lakh category), eased off through the first three quarters of the 2012 calendar year.

However, satellite towns, Faridabad and Gurgaon and even Greater Noida did better than Delhi. In Faridabad demand increased by at least 12 per cent. The uptick in the industrial town is due to it being the second cheapest in the region at an average price of Rs 4,000 per square feet.

Experts like Santosh Kumar, CEO (Operations) Jones LangLasalle believe that the market will recover in next financial year but interest costs have to come down. ?An RBI repo cut soon will help which should bring in more buyers,? he said.

Data from PropEquity, a real estate advisory firm, however, shows the pace of increase for high-end segment (flats above Rs 60 lakh) have slowed. For instance during the third quarter of 2012 there was a 539 per cent increase in absorption rates in the Greater Noida area. That looks impressive but it pales when pitched against the 3,691 per cent increase in new launches in the area during the same period, albeit from a thin base.

No wonder experts are divided on the nature of the slowdown in the NCR. ?The year 2012 has been a mixed bag for residential real estate. Overall, the residential unit sales in NCR have seen a drop of approximately 42 per cent in 2012 as compared to 2011.

The NCR area witnessed a drop of approximately 51 per cent in new launches in the ticket price segment of less than Rs 60 lakh,? said Samir Jasuja, CEO of PropEquity. But Anuj Puri, MD of Jones LangLasalle said that 50 per cent of the launches across the country have been in the NCR area ?so demand is arguably strong?.

And as the valuation of the real estate firms focussed on the NCR in the Crisil data set shows they have underperformed the Nifty. Parsvnath Developers, with a strong Delhi presence is expected to grow its revenues at a CAGR of 11 per cent in next financial year but its EBITDA margin is expected to decline from 46.6 per cent in the current year to 39.1 per cent due to declining contribution from the high-margin projects.

Experts like Santosh Kumar expect the revival to begin from here. Pradeep Mishra, managing director of Sainik Estates, another real estate advisory firm said ?The demand in the real estate market in the region will recover only after end users start buying, which is not the case now. Due to various reasons, I do not see the demand for homes from end users picking in the near future and the recovery is going to take some time?.

The countdown

But real estate companies believe that the demand in the market is going to turn around soon. ?There is no reason why we should see any slowdown in the market. Yes, we could possibly see a decline in the high-end flat market (of Rs 60 lakh and above) because of the small size of such buyers available but property in the segment below that will always find takers,? said Pankaj Bajaj, president, Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India, Delhi-NCR Chapter (CREDAI-NCR) and MD of Edelco Infrastructure.

The reasons for the unsteady performance could be many ranging from buyers wanting to purchase properties purely for making an investments to some of the developers releasing their inventory in batches. By itself, timing the market is not questionable but coupled with a speculative demand led to a surge that has cooled off.

?Overleveraged, many large real estate companies could not substantially reduce debt. Most real estate stocks, therefore, have significantly underperformed the benchmark S&P CNX NIFTY and trade at historically low valuations,? said the Crisil report. Verma says that the revival in demand for these markets will be fastest when prices cool off even marginally. The portends of a better priced market are moving into place.

Last week the Reserve Bank of India allowed external commercial borrowing to be accessed for low-cost housing projects. This could be a significant gamechanger but till it happens Rohit will have to wait.

(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was admitted to a New York hospital Sunday after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton's doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot but said Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor the medication.

"Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," Reines said in a statement. "They will determine if any further action is required."

Clinton, 65, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated. The concussion was diagnosed Dec. 13 and Clinton was forced to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East that had been planned for the next week.

The seriousness of a blood clot "depends on where it is," said Dr. Gholam Motamedi, a neurologist at Georgetown University Medical Center who was not involved in Clinton's care.

Clots in the legs are a common risk after someone has been bedridden, as Clinton may have been for a time after her concussion. Those are "no big deal" and are treated with six months of blood thinners to allow them to dissolve on their own and to prevent further clots from forming, he said.

A clot in a lung or the brain is more serious. Lung clots, called pulmonary embolisms, can be deadly, and a clot in the brain can cause a stroke, Motamedi said.

Keeping Clinton in the hospital for a couple of days could allow doctors to perform more tests to determine why the clot formed, and to rule out a heart problem or other condition that may have led to it, he said.

Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center, said blood can pool on the surface of the brain or in other areas of the brain after a concussion, but those would not be treated with blood thinners, as Clinton's aide described.

Clinton was forced to cancel Dec. 20 testimony before Congress about a scathing report into the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The report found that serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed.

Some conservative commentators suggested Clinton was faking the seriousness of her illness and concussion to avoid testifying, although State Department officials vehemently denied that was the case.

Lawmakers at the hearings ? including Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman who has been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Clinton ? offered her their best wishes.

Last Thursday, before the discovery of the blood clot, Reines said Clinton was expected to return to work this week.

The former first lady and senator, who had always planned to step down as America's top diplomat in January, is known for her grueling travel schedule. She is the most traveled secretary of state in history, having visited 112 countries while in the job.

Clinton is considered a front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, although she has not announced plans to run.

?Godzilla? Matsui retires from baseball

?Godzilla? Matsui retires from baseball Tributes flood in for Japanese

NEW YORK, Dec 28, (Agencies): Hideki Matsui has retired from professional baseball, saying he is no longer able to perform at the level that made him a star slugger in two countries.
The 2009 World Series MVP with the New York Yankees and a three-time Central League MVP with Tokyo?s Yomiuri Giants struggled in a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Rays last season and recently made up his mind to call time on a career which lasted 20 years ? the first 10 in Japan.
Despite choosing to make the announcement in New York because the city was special to him, the nearly hour-long news conference was conducted only in Japanese and was broadcast live to his home country, where it was 7 a.m. Friday. A Japanese reporter translated portions of the event for the American baseball writers in attendance.
Before he left for New York in 2003, Matsui told his fans in Japan that he would give his life to playing in the major leagues, give whatever he had, the reporter said. ?Today is the day he put a period to that.?
In front of more than 15 cameras and dozens of Japanese reporters, many of whom detailed every aspect of his career in the United States, the outfielder/designated hitter gave a 12-minute speech before answering questions for about 40 minutes more, betraying little emotion except for that sly smile he flashed during his playing days.
Nicknamed Godzilla, Matsui was already perhaps the most popular player of his generation in Japan when he signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Yankees.
While Seattle?s Ichiro Suzuki appeared to shy away from the attention, Matsui walked right into the spotlight and embraced the scrutiny.
Playing for the Yankees was, ?one of the best things that happened to him in his life,? the Japanese reporter quoted Matsui as saying.
Always cool under pressure, Matsui hit a grand slam in his first game at Yankee Stadium and matched a World Series record with six RBIs in his pinstripe finale seven years later ??? during the clinching Game 6 of the 2009 Series.
?I?ve had a lot of teammates over the years with the Yankees, but I will always consider Hideki one of my favorites,? Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. ?Despite being shadowed by a large group of reporters, having the pressures of performing for his fans both in New York and Japan and becoming acclimated to the bright lights of New York City, he always remained focused and committed to his job and to those of us he shared the clubhouse with. I have a lot of respect for Hideki.?
In his career with New York, Matsui made two All-Star teams and hit .292 with 140 doubles and 597 RBIs. He played in his first 518 major league games after playing in 1,250 straight games in Japan.
In his first remarks after breaking his wrist and ending that streak in 2006, he apologized for getting hurt. Matsui returned four months later and went 4 for 4.
Matsui was known for being stoic but he also had a sense of humor, and he got a good laugh Thursday, telling the crowd that he doesn?t like to use the word ?retirement? because he will continue to play baseball for fun.
Still, Matsui ruled out competing this year in the World Baseball Classic or joining a team in Japan again.
?He was not confident he?d be able to play at the level he played at 10 years ago,? the reporter said.
In fact, Matsui still has not decided on what to do next.
Matsui hit 21 homers for the Los Angeles Angels in 2010 after New York didn?t offer him a new contract, but his numbers fell off considerably after that. He slumped to .147 (14 for 95) with the Rays in 37 games before being released.
Overall, Matsui batted .282 with 175 homers and 760 RBIs for the Yankees, Angels, Oakland Athletics and Rays. In Japan he had a .304 career average with 332 homers and 889 RBIs in 1,268 games.
?Hideki Matsui, in many ways, embodied what this organization stands for. He was dedicated to his craft, embraced his responsibilities to his team and fans, and elevated his play when he was needed the most,? Yankees general managing partner Hal Steinbrenner said. ?He did all these things with a humility that was distinctly his own, which is why he was such a big part of our success and why he will always be a cherished member of the Yankees family.?
Matsui said he first started thinking about the Yankees when he became a professional and his manager with the Giants told him to aspire to be a player like former New York center fielder Joe DiMaggio. Then in 1999 ? three years from free agency ? Matsui went to Yankee Stadium to watch a game and was ?astonished? at the level of play. He thought to himself that he would ?like to become a player that would be capable of playing at Yankee Stadium,? the reporter translated.
Matsui arrived in New York after a season in which he hit 50 homers for the most well-known team in Japan.
?Hideki came to the Yankees as a superstar and immediately became a team favorite. Not only for his talent but for the unselfishness he brought to the game every day,? said MLB executive vice president for baseball operations Joe Torre, who was Matsui?s manager for his first five seasons in New York. ?Hideki Matsui is a winner and I was proud to be his manager.?
In Tokyo, Japanese baseball managers, players, fans and media showered with praise former New York Yankees slugger Matsui Friday as he announced his retirement after 20 years in Japanese and US baseball.
Some hoped the 38-year-old outfielder would remain in the game and one day manage Japan?s hugely popular Yomiuri Giants ? his club for his first 10 professional years before a high-profile move to the US major leagues.
?Thank you, glorious Godzilla,? the Yomiuri Shimbun said in its evening edition hours after Matsui, named after the world-famous Japanese movie monster, bade farewell at a news conference in New York.
?Japanese and American fans who watched his dynamic play are all filled with sadness,? the mass-circulation daily said.
?Hitting a total 507 home-runs while loved in Japan, US?, read a headline in the Mainichi Shimbun.
Matsui, who played for three different clubs over the last three seasons after becoming the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 World Series with the Yankees, said he had not been able to produce good results in the past two years due to nagging knee problems.
?I felt it was the end of a great Matsui era,? said Giants manager Tatsunori Hara, who used Matsui as the key fourth batter in 2002 during his first stint in the post.
The Giants won the Japan Series title that year and Matsui left for the Yankees the next season. The Tokyo team also won the title in 2012 under Hara.
?I was stunned by his very strong will, sturdy body and unmatched power,? said Hara, who was in his last year as a player when Matsui joined the team in 1993. ?He grew up quickly from his first year.? Hara, 54, said he had always considered Matsui as an ?old boy? of the Giants.
?I believe he wishes to work himself to the bone for the development of Japanese baseball,? he said. ?I believe he has a strong feeling particularly toward the Giants.?
Giants owner Kojiro Shiraishi said he would ?back up? Matsui if he had plans to study the sport?s management and contribute to Japan?s baseball world.
The daily Nikkan Sports, devoting four pages ? including the front ? to Matsui in its morning edition which was published before the announcement, said in a headline that he was due to ?bring Godzilla II to the Giants?.
It estimated he had earned $84 million in salary over 10 years in the United States, in addition to 2.3 billion yen ($27 million) paid to him by the Giants over 10 years.
Matsui?s father Masao, 70, said his son had ?nothing to regret as a baseball player with such good results?.
?I do feel that he has been loved by fans in both the United States and Japan,? said the senior Matsui. ?I believe he has a mission to contribute to the baseball world and children.?
After the Yankees, Matsui played for one year each with the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics. He appeared in 34 major league games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012, batting .147 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
He hit .282 with 175 homers and 760 RBIs in his major league career.

Looking For A Pet Gate? You'll Have Many Options ? Life with ...

If you?ll remember, I asked for a pet gate this Christmas.

Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

Well, I?m happy to report that ?Santa? came through, and I?m eagerly awaiting our move so we can put it up and try it out.

As you may have read before, it took a while for us to pick out a pet gate, since it needed to accommodate a number of specific requirements. So time will tell if this gate can really pass the test. (Don?t worry, I?ll keep you all posted!)

That said, there are dozens of pet gates available for purchase, and they all offer different features. I wanted to share some of those specifics with you, in case you too are looking for the perfect pet gate.

Material

Material can play a major role in durability, cost and more. Most gates that I?ve found come in one of three materials:

  • Wood (these come in a variety of finishes)
  • Metal (these come in a variety of finishes, too)
  • Plastic

While no one material is superior over another, they do each have their own pros and cons. For example, as nice as wood may look, a young puppy may chew on it or your cat may scratch on it. Similarly, a nice wooden gate may look more attractive in your home than a plastic one, and so on.

Mounting

Detail of the pet gate above

This is probably one of the most important variables you?ll want to consider. How a gate mounts can impact where it?s located, how easily you can move it, how secure it will be and more.

  • Wall-mount: Many heavier/more intense gates are wall-mounted. This means that some part of the gate will be screwed into your wall, which will make it more secure. Gates that are wall-mounted will likely be in that location for a while, as you can?t move them easily.
  • Pressure-mount: Pressure-mount gates are the ones that do not screw into the wall; instead you manually adjust the tension to hold it in place. If not done properly, these can be knocked out of place. Some pressure-mount gates also come with a wall-mounting option.

*If you?re considering placing a pet gate in a doorway that has a baseboard, look for a gate that features an independent tension system. This means you can adjust the top tension to one width, and the bottom tension to another width.

  • Free-standing: These gates can go just about anywhere, since they stand on their own. Some may have their own feet to hold them up, others may be modular, consisting of several sections, so you can shape them as needed.

Height

Richell Freestanding Pet Barrier

Thankfully, gates come in a variety of heights to meet all of our needs: from the low gates that are perfect for small, non-jumping pets to extra-tall gates.

Most that are tall enough feature walk-through doors for humans. Extra-tall gates are ideal for larger pets/children and pets that are capable of jumping over lower gates. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc)

Width

Keep in mind that some pet gates only extend to a specific width. To accommodate larger door openings, some come with extensions you can add on the ends. Others require you to purchase these separately.

Some gates come in extra-wide widths for larger openings.

Barrier Design

  • Diamond/square/hexagon: These patterns are popular on less-expensive pressure-mounted gates. However, as I found out with CG, they may also be easily climbed by a smaller, agile pet.
  • Bars: Bars can be a great solution for pets who have a tendency of climbing pet gates. That said, make sure you check the distance between each bar. Some of us have small pets who may be able to squeeze through them.
  • Screen/fabric: Instead of featuring metal bars or crisscrossing wood, these gates feature a piece of material that blocks off one room from another. (http://bit.ly/Uhat7E)

Walk-through Door

These are ideal especially if your gate is too high for you to step over easily. This is its own topic since these doors can vary greatly from gate to gate. Read a product?s details to learn the specific features of your walk-through gate. In the meantime, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Carlson Extra-tall Walk Through Pet Gate

How the gate opens: Some require you to lift the door, others require you to press a button with your hand or foot. Carefully consider this to figure out what would be easiest for you, and which your pet can?t manipulate.

  • Which way the door swings: This is especially important if your gate is located at the top of stairs. Some doors are made specifically for this, so it won?t open toward the stairs. This prevents anyone from accidentally falling through the door and down the stairs.
  • If the door locks: Some doors feature other locking mechanisms that make it additionally difficult for anyone or anything to get through unintentionally.

While you?re thinking of all of those things, also consider how often you?ll walk through the gate, if you?ll be holding anything (may impact how many hands you?ll have free to open the gate), etc. Some gates even feature an automatic close.

Extra Features?

  • Pet door: Perfect if you?re trying to keep a larger pet or child in one room, but want to give free rein to a cat or smaller pet. (http://bit.ly/Uh8ssc) Check the dimensions of the pet door to make sure it?s the right size for your smaller pets.

Have you purchased a pet gate? Which features were most important to you? Please share in the comments!

I just came across Osho?s provocative words below?? And I am asking anyone with long? experience of Osho and Osho?s ashram/commune, (such as many of the contributors to Sannyasnews),? whether Osho is just here ?the speaker?,? as is often said speaking very well, but contrary wise on all manner of subjects to take his disciples beyond their egos ? and sometimes with the tongue very much in the cheek?? Or when He pronounces on such subjects,? can he be said in the normal sense to be standing behind his words??

?? Shantam

Osho: Premarital and Extramarital Relationships
Man is by nature polygamous. Monogamy is enforced on him. To satisfy his polygamous nature, man created prostitutes. Prostitution and Private Property are by-products of Marriage and Family. And this ugly institution of prostitution and possessing private properties will not disappear from the world unless marriage disappears.
Most of the marital problems arise because premarital and extramarital sex is denied. In a better human society premarital and extramarital sex should be appreciated.
Unless a man or a woman has lived in many pre-marital relationships there is no possibility of choosing a right partner. This is such a simple phenomenal! Unless you have experienced many women and men in your life, how can you choose who is going to be the right person to live with?
I am not against extra-marital relationships. Extra-marital relationships help marriage, they don?t destroy it. The people who are against them are really teaching you possessiveness in an indirect way. When I say I am not against extra-marital relationships I am teaching you non-possessiveness.
Extra-marital relationships are very significant, immensely helpful to psychological growth and maturity. In the new world, to which I have dedicated my whole life, there should be no marriage ? only lovers. And as long as they are pleased to be together, they can be together; and the moment they feel that they have been together too long, a little change will be good. All the psychologists are agreed on one point: couples who love each other should have a few love affairs once in a while. Those love affairs will renew their relationship, will refresh it. You will start seeing beauty and a greater intimacy again in your old lover. Intimacy is far more fulfilling than any sexual relationship can ever be.
If one allows nature without any inhibitions to take its own course, one transcends biology, body, mind, without any effort and can taste the ultimate bliss which is not dependent on your biology, body or mind. But we are full of inhibitions. If you are repressive, then you cannot transcend biological pulls naturally, without any effort. So, the first thing to be remembered is that nature is right.
To transform sexual energy into spirituality is my basic approach.

Jet rolls off Moscow runway, splits apart

By Alissa de Carbonnel, Reuters

MOSCOW -- A Russian airliner split into pieces after it slid off the runway and crashed onto a highway outside Moscow on Saturday, killing at least four of the 12 crew on board and leaving smoking chunks of fuselage on the icy road.

Television footage showed the Tupolev 204 jet, broken into pieces, with smoke billowing from the tail end and the cockpit broken clean off the front.?

A man was thrown from the plane as it rammed into the barrier of the highway outside Vnukovo airport, one witness told the TV channel Rossiya-24.

Another witness described pulling other people from the wreckage.

"The plane split into three pieces," Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for the airport, said in televised comments.

An Emergency Services spokesman said four people died of injuries after the crash and four others were in hospital. Police said 12 crew members were on board, but no passengers.

"The plane went off the runway, broke through the barrier and caught fire," police spokesman Gennady Bogachyov said.

The mid-range Tu-204 was operated by the Russian airline Red Wings and was traveling from the Czech Republic, Krylova said.

Rubble from the crash was scattered across the highway and the plane's wings were torn from the fuselage, witnesses said.

Alexander Usoltsev / AP

Rescuers work at the site of the plane crash at Moscow's Vnukovo airport on Saturday.

"We saw how the plane skidded off the runway ... The nose, where business class is, broke off and a man fell out," said a witness, who gave his name as Alexei. "We helped him get into a mini-bus to take him to the hospital."

Another witness described pulling four people from the wreckage when he arrived at the scene before emergency service workers. "We could not get the pilot out of the cockpit but we saw a lot of blood," he told Rossiya-24.

Russian investigators said preliminary findings pointed to pilot error as the cause of the crash.

Russia and other former Soviet republics had some of the world's worst air-traffic safety records last year, with a total accident rate almost three times the world average, the International Air Transport Association said.

A passenger jet crashed and burst into flames after takeoff in Siberia in April, killing 31 people, and an airliner slammed into a riverbank in September 2011, wiping out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team in a crash that killed 44 people.

The Russian-built Tu-204, which is comparable in size to a Boeing 757 or Airbus A321, is a Soviet-era design that was produced in the mid-1990s but is no longer being made. There have no major accidents previously reported with Tu-204s.

The crash during peak holiday travel ahead of Russia's New Year's vacation, which runs from Sunday through Jan. 9, cast a spotlight on Russia's poor air-safety record despite President Vladimir Putin's calls to improve controls.?

Shock, heartbreak for U.S. families adopting Russian children

(Reuters) - For months, life for Ann and Kurt Suhs has been a whirlwind of assembling documents, getting fingerprinted and scheduling evaluations of their Atlanta-area home in preparation for welcoming a Russian child into their family for a second time.

Now, the couple - who adopted their son Ben, now 7, from Russia at age 13 months - say they were blindsided by news that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Friday banning Americans from adopting Russian children effective next Tuesday.

"It's hard to think that it would all stop, that it would all just come to such a screeching halt," Ann Suhs said. "We haven't talked about a Plan B. We hope and we pray."

She and her husband are among some 1,500 U.S. families who are in the process of adopting a child from Russia, according to an estimate from the Alexandria, Virginia-based National Council For Adoption. Some of those families had just started paperwork, while others had already been matched with a child and, in some cases, had the chance to meet the boy or girl.

The Russian measure was passed in retaliation for a U.S. human rights law - approved this month as part of a trade bill and signed by President Barack Obama - that bars entry to Russians accused of involvement in the death in custody of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and other alleged rights abuses.

Putin has defended the Russian law by saying his country should care for its own children. But critics including child rights advocates say it is an unfair move that uses orphans as pawns in an unrelated dispute.

Ann and Kurt Suhs, who were waiting to be matched with a child, had been frantically checking every morning for news about the Russian proposal moving through the legislative process. They had chosen Russia in part because Kurt Suhs' grandmother grew up there.

On a recent day, "I looked at Kurt and said, 'Do we know what we're going to do if this goes through?'" Ann Suhs said. "We can't put our heads around it to say, 'OK, we give up on this dream.'"

A November agreement between Russia and the United States calls for a one-year transition period in the case of either country banning adoptions, said Lauren Koch, a spokeswoman for the National Council For Adoption.

"All we can hope for now is that President Putin will honor the terms of that agreement and at least, at a very minimum, allow those families who have been matched with a child to bring him/her home," Koch said in an email.

'ONCE YOU'VE MET THAT CHILD'

Americans have adopted more than 45,000 Russian children since 1999, including 962 last year.

More than 650,000 children are considered orphans in Russia - though some were rejected by their parents or taken from dysfunctional homes. Of those, 110,000 lived in state institutions in 2011, according to government figures.

Many American families are now in limbo.

"Once you've met that child, that's your child, and that child is in your mind, he or she is in your heart, there are pictures on your refrigerator," said Frank Garrott, president of Gladney Center for Adoption, a Fort Worth, Texas-based adoption agency working with about 25 families now in the process of adopting a child from Russia.

In Oakland, California, the news from Russia has Lease Wong holding her little girl especially tightly. She and her husband, Marty, arrived home from Russia about a month ago with their newly adopted daughter, Brianna, who is now 23 months old.

"I think she knows she has a family," said Lease Wong, who owns a toy store. "I have to think of all those other children. They're losing their opportunity for a family."

As Wong spoke, the girl chattered away in the background.

Those are sounds that Kim and Robert Summers are desperate to hear. They traveled to Russia in August to meet the boy who they call Preston - he's known as Stanislav in Russia - then returned to Russia earlier this month to continue the adoption process. They had expected to go back to Russia in January to bring the boy home to New Jersey.

At their home in New Jersey, a stroller for the red-headed 21-month-old sits in the dining room and his crib is already partially assembled.

The Summers' two-year adoption journey followed eight years of infertility struggles, three miscarriages and four unsuccessful attempts at in vitro fertilization. After soul-searching and prayers, they turned to international adoption, and the match with the boy was approved at a December court hearing, they said.

Kim Summers, a chef who has no other children, said she quit her job to become a stay-at-home mother to Preston.

When they left Russia in December, they were so sure they would be back the next month that they left their diaper bag with a family there.

On Friday, Kim Summers expressed shock, outrage and a determination to bring her son home in January as planned.

"I promised this baby I was going to be his mommy," she said. "I'm a mommy on a mission."

Panasonic P02E smartphone appears in FCC flesh, looks to be Japanbound

Earlier this month, a supposed Panasonic P02-E smartphone popped up on an NTT DoCoMo Japanese server log, but such scant evidence required more than a few grains of salt to swallow it. Now, the ever-reliable FCC has revealed the device to be an actual thing, and putting the two sources together would make it a 5-inch, 1,920 x 1080, Android 4.1.2 smartphone with a quad-core, 1.5GHz APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, along with LTE and NFC capability. Don't get too excited if those specs float your boat, however -- judging by the retractable TV antenna, NTT DoCoMo origins and general Panasonic elusiveness in the west, it looks to be aimed squarely at the Japanese market only.

Christmas provides Connecticut town a break from mourning

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Christmas has helped some people in the grieving Connecticut town of Newtown cope a little better with the shooting tragedy that killed 20 schoolchildren, while others have yet to feel the holiday joy.

Smiles returned for those taking a respite from the mourning now that funerals for the victims have concluded. For the crestfallen, the holiday spirit was absent in a town that just buried its children.

"We're getting through this with our faith and our prayer. People are smiling a little more now," said John Barry, owner of an information technology staffing company. "The week was so horrible. Now it's time to celebrate Christmas."

This largely Christian town was shaken on the morning of December 14, when a 20-year-old gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle shot dead 20 children aged 6 and 7 and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Little is known about the shooter, Adam Lanza, who also killed his mother before the rampage and later himself to create a death toll of 28 in a tragedy that has revitalized the debate over U.S. gun control laws.

The sadness has moved some to act. Makeshift monuments to the dead have popped up all over town, funds have been raised, and many visitors have made a pilgrimage to Newtown, offering support.

"It doesn't feel like Christmas. It's too sad to feel like Christmas," said Joanne Brunetti of Newtown, who was staffing a 24-hour candlelight vigil in the center of town early Christmas morning. "I got my shopping done a lot later than usual. I just felt like my heart wasn't in it."

At another monument across town, Tim O'Leary of nearby Danbury, Connecticut, said reading the memorials to the victims only helped "a little."

"It (Christmas) shouldn't even be happening," O'Leary said. "Life has changed as we know it."

MISSING ANGEL

The mood was more uplifting at Christmas Eve Mass on Monday night at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which held its biggest service at the high school auditorium.

Parishioners Dan and Michelle McAloon of Newtown decided to go Christmas caroling this year for the first time, gathering other families and children to roam a neighborhood where the families of three victims live.

"We were just spreading some cheer, trying to make the situation a little better," Michelle McAloon said.

"They all smiled, and they all cried a little," she said of the victims' families.

"Everybody said we are doing it again next year," Dan McAloon said of the carolers. "It's going to become a tradition."

Nine families from the parish lost someone in the shooting, and at least four of those families came to the big Christmas Eve Mass, Monsignor Robert Weiss said.

"There is reason to celebrate," Weiss said after the service. "Hopefully when people start to see their extended families, or people from outside of Newtown, or even go out of town, they will be able to. You can't get away from it in this town," he said.

Christmas Eve Mass featured a pageant that told the Christian story of Jesus' birth. One of the more poignant moments came when people applauded a group of two dozen little girls dressed as angels. They all knew shooting victim Olivia Engel, 6, was supposed to be among them.

"I highly recommend that before you rip open those gifts, say a prayer for those children," Weiss told parishioners. "Then give your own children a hug."

Hugo Chavez Cancer Surgery: Bolivia's President Evo Morales

HAVANA -- Bolivian President Evo Morales has made a lightning trip to Havana where key ally Hugo Chavez is convalescing after cancer surgery.

Morales did not speak to foreign journalists during his weekend visit. Cuban state-run media didn't confirm that he visited Chavez, but said he came "to express his support" for the Venezuelan president. The Cuban government had invited media to cover Morales' arrival Saturday and departure Sunday but withdrew the invitation with no explanation.

Photos released by Cuban media showed President Raul Castro greeting Morales at the airport in Havana.

Morales aides said Monday he planned to make a statement later about Chavez.

Chavez underwent on Dec. 11 his fourth cancer-related operation since last year, two months after winning reelection to a six-year term. Venezuelan officials say his condition is stable.

Is the Amazon Rainforest Drying Out?

The trees and vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon are adapting to a warmer, drier future?but can they adapt fast enough?

amazon-fragmentLAND CLEARING: Smoke rises from a fire set to clear land for farming or pasture outside Tarapoto, Peru. Roads and fields fragment the forest, drying it faster, changing precipitation patterns and making it more difficult for species to shift their ranges to adapt to climate change. Image: © BARBARA FRASER

TARAPOTO, Peru? For tropical ecologist Gregory Asner, flying over the Peruvian Amazon from the town of Tarapoto is like traveling back in time. Modern houses, rice paddies and oil palm plantations give way to steep, forested mountains and then to green, unbroken forest that curves toward the horizon.

Suddenly the tree canopy below the twin-engine plane turns a mottled gray-brown, a sign of drought damage that he estimates may affect as many as half the trees.

In this remote corner of Peru?s Ucayali region, Asner, a tropical ecologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University, is afraid he is seeing the future. In the last few years this patch of forest has been hit by two ?once-in-a-century droughts??one in 2005 and another in 2010. These dry spells may become more frequent as temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean rise and as humans burn thousands of square kilometers of forest for farming. Although it has seen warmer temperatures in the past, the western Amazon is under siege now from a combination of a warming climate and human population growth that it has never faced before, and scientists are scrambling to determine whether existing protected areas will be enough to buffer against the changes to come.

Behind the plane Asner glimpses smoke rising from fires set to clear land for farming. Migration from the Andean highlands has boosted Peru?s Amazonian states to the top of the population growth chart, and the influx of people is taking a toll on the forest.

Peru?s Ministry of Environment?using satellite images and Carnegie-provided software?calculates that the country lost about 6,475 square kilometers of forest, an area the size of Delaware, between 2005 and 2009, up from some 4,550 square kilometers in the five previous years. Losing forest reduces precipitation, further stressing the remaining trees. ?About 50 percent of the rain that falls in the Amazon is generated by the forest itself, through transpiration and evaporation,? Asner says. ?Deforestation exacerbates the drought problem, because it removes that internal engine.?

Clearing fields and pastures also leaves more exposed forest edges, drying out the interior and making it more likely to burn if an agricultural fire escapes. Fires during the 2005 and 2010 droughts added 3.8 gigatons of carbon to the atmosphere, according to Simon Lewis, a forest ecologist at University College London. In recent genetic studies Lewis found that Amazonian trees have weathered past climatic warming, but the changes were slower then and were not exacerbated by humans, he says.

Faced with warmer, drier conditions, trees have three options:

?Individuals can acclimate, species can adapt or migrate, or they go extinct,? says Kenneth Feeley, a biologist at Florida International University. A floral species can expand its range into a cooler region, but only as fast as seed dispersal allows. Feeley, who studies trees on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, was surprised to see range changes there in just a few years. ?Species are moving upslope about three vertical meters a year?that?s really fast,? he says, although perhaps not fast enough. ?Based on the climate change that?s already happening, they need to move nine or 10 vertical meters a years.?

In the lowlands, deforestation reduces the areas to which species can move, and fields, pastures and roads create barriers to dispersal. Peru has some large protected areas, such as Man? National Park, where Feeley does his work, but scientists don?t know if they are big enough?or in the right places?to allow species to migrate in a rapidly changing climate.

CIA: ?Zero Dark Thirty? not a realistic portrayal of hunt for Osama bin Laden

The CIA says scenes of torture in the new film 'Zero Dark Thirty' are not an accurate portrayal of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. This follows similar criticism from three senior US Senators who say the film is 'grossly inaccurate and misleading'.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 22, 2012

This film image released by Columbia Pictures shows a scene from "Zero Dark Thirty," directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The film has been criticized for its scenes of torture.

In an unusual letter to CIA employees, the agency?s acting director Michael Morrell says the controversial Hollywood film ?Zero Dark Thirty? takes ?significant artistic license? with the years-long hunt that led to Navy SEALs killing terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and is ?not a realistic portrayal of the facts.?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It?s not the first official complaint about the movie.

Earlier in the week, three senior US Senators ? Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, fellow Democrat Carl Levin and Republican John McCain ? sent a letter to Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, in which they expressed their ?deep disappointment? with the film for its ?grossly inaccurate and misleading ? suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the location of Osama bin Laden.?

?Regardless of what message the filmmakers intended to convey, the movie clearly implies that the CIA?s coercive interrogation techniques were effective in eliciting important information related to a courier for Osama bin Laden,? the senators wrote. ?We have reviewed CIA records and know that this is incorrect.?

?The fundamental problem,? they continue, ?is that people who see Zero Dark Thirty will believe that the events it portrays are facts?. Recent public opinion polls suggest that a narrow majority of Americans believe that torture can be justified as an effective form of intelligence gathering. This is false. We know that cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of prisoners is an unreliable and highly ineffective means of gathering intelligence.?

No one know this better than Senator McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent years as a POW in North Vietnam, where he was subjected to brutal torture used to elicit false confessions.

'Zero Dark Thirty': top 3 controversies surrounding the Osama bin Laden film

In his letter to CIA employees, acting director Morrell (who took over from disgraced director David Petraeus), does not say that waterboarding and other forms of what the agency calls ?enhanced interrogation? did not occur during the hunt for bin Laden.

He acknowledges that such methods, which critics say amount to torture, were part of the agency?s ?former detention and interrogation program.? (In ?Zero Dark Thirty,? these are graphically shown as water-boarding, being hung from a ceiling, beatings, sleep deprivation, and being locked in a coffin-like box.)

But Morrell takes issue with the film?s portrayal of prisoner abuse and the role it played in the Bin Laden mission.

?The film creates the strong impression that the enhanced interrogation techniques that were part of our former detention and interrogation program were the key to finding Bin Laden.?That impression is false,? Morrell writes. ?As we have said before, the truth is that multiple streams of intelligence led CIA analysts to conclude that Bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad.?Some came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques, but there were many other sources as well.?And, importantly, whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved.?

Earlier this month, the Senate Intelligence Committee voted 9-6 to approve a classified report highly critical of the CIA?s detention and interrogation program.

?I strongly believe that the creation of long-term, clandestine ?black sites? and the use of so-called ?enhanced-interrogation techniques? were terrible mistakes,? committee chairman Feinstein said regarding the report. ?The majority of the Committee agrees.?

Based on their view that this element of ?Zero Dark Thirty? is ?grossly inaccurate and misleading,? Senators Feinstein, Levin, and McCain say Sony Pictures Entertainment has ?an obligation to state that the role of torture in the hunt for Osama bin Laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative."

Adoption Holiday Traditions | Kinship Center Birth Parents

All families have holiday traditions.? Maybe you decorate your home right after Thanksgiving so that you can have Christmas cheer for the entire month.? Maybe you wait until Christmas Eve to trim the tree with friends and family.? Maybe you celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa.? Whatever you do during the holidays in your family, the tradition has been passed down for many years and you know what to expect and you look forward to the customs that define your family.?

?

Consider children who come into a home through adoption or foster care.? These children may have grown up with the tradition that was part of their family of origin.? Or maybe the home environment was too chaotic and the holidays were not formally celebrated.? Maybe the child was raised in a family that was of a different religion than yours and celebrated their beliefs differently.? Maybe this is the child?s first holiday with you.

?

As families move forward to adopt a child, please take some time to think about the holidays in a meaningful way for the child placed in your home.? Children who are older that have been placed for adoption through the foster care system carry with them all the past holiday celebrations in which they have participated.? Take some time to discuss what was important to them before you plan your new family holiday.? Including some of the past into your celebration will make them feel more included and at ease. Many family celebrations would not be complete without a certain food, a smell or a song.? Learn how to make these foods, sing these songs and honor the past traditions for your child.

?

Younger children also deserve to learn the traditions of their culture.? Even if this is the first time they are celebrating the holiday, an adoptive family should take the time to discover how the holidays are celebrated in the child?s culture. Incorporating parts of these new customs with the past traditions of the family, creates a new way to honor all members of the family.
