Aging, structurally unsound retaining walls are a relatively common problem in Minneapolis. The leaning wall behind St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, holding back the prominent hill overlooking Lake of the Isles on which the landmark church was built, posed extraordinary problems ? ?a challenge of almost biblical proportions,? said Howard Noziska, president of Encompass Inc., the Eden Prairie-based engineering and forensic analysis firm retained to find a solution.
Noziska describes the steepness of St. Paul?s site as ?scary.? But the steepness was only part of the challenge in fixing the collapsing wall and stabilizing the hill. Compounding the problem was an extremely restricted location that not only offered physical barriers ? stairs blocking access to the wall ? but religious and cultural barriers as well, in the form of the buried cremains of deceased members of the congregation and the integrity of a historic structure that had to be assured.
Conditions were exacerbated by the fact that small trees planted many years ago were now fully grown, with their roots a major part of the problem, and several seasons of record snowfalls and heavy rain had loaded the soil with moisture. Taken together, all of these conditions were increasing both the vertical and lateral loads on the retaining wall itself ? a structure a foot thick, 6 feet high and nearly 60 feet long.
?The hill was doing what comes naturally,? said Noziska, ?sliding, moving downhill, and putting great pressure on the old retaining wall and related sidewalks and stairways. Uncorrected, it presented a potential danger to churchgoers as well as a threat to the church structure itself.?
Eden Prairie-based Encompass Inc. designed and supervised the installation by Theis Construction of a series of ?helical piers? ? large screw-like rods, twisted into the soil to provide the counterbalancing forces the retaining wall needed to restrain and stabilize the soil behind the wall.
Any solution had to be affordable for a congregation with limited resources, yet one that would endure for decades. Encompass? answer was a creative combination of advanced engineering thinking and old-fashioned common sense.
The firm designed and supervised the installation by Theis Construction of a series of ?helical piers? ? large screw-like rods, twisted into the soil to provide the counterbalancing forces the retaining wall needed to restrain and stabilize the soil behind the wall. This created counterforces to the hillside?s natural inclination to keep sliding and pressuring the wall itself.
A new foot-thick reinforced concrete wall with new buttresses was strengthened by the installation of extensive rebar reinforcing rods.
Because of the accessibility problem, all of the concrete required for construction had to be ?bucketed? up the hillside. To reach the difficult work area, temporary bridges were built across the steep stairways, sufficient to provide access to the work area by Bobcat without blocking entry to the church for services.
The result? ?A strong new retaining wall that will serve the congregation and protect St. Paul?s historic structure for decades into the future,? Noziska said.

Speaking as a graduate student who has been living on her own since March, I try every possible way to be energy efficient in order to help conserve our planet as well as help my wallet! At this day and age it seems like being energy efficient is a fad or trend but it should be looked as a way of life that is here to stay. There are many resources available for people to become educated and aware of the problems that are ongoing and finding ways of fixing them. It is up to us to practice energy efficiency in order to protect the environment and save some money while we?re at it.
When picking a location to live for college, opt to get a place closest to campus or on campus. This way you can walk or ride a bike to class instead of driving to school. My university is a commuter school and because of that they have made a ?go green ride? incentive where students are grouped together depending on where they live and receive better parking if they decide to carpool. Although this is not the most popular option, more and more students are turning to it. Even in my cohort, students have posted on our message board if anyone wishes to carpool. This is something that has yet to be fully developed but it is on its way.
In the community where I live, I know that we can ask for a free air filter every month. Although replacing the filter monthly does create extra trash, the air conditioner will be able to run more efficiently with a cleaner air filter. Ideally buying a reusable air filter that is replaced once a month is the best solution, but for houses or apartment complexes that don?t offer free air filters, the air conditioning will work more efficiently if the filter is replaced.
Since my days as a graduate student consist of going to class and then studying and reading, I tend to come home some days to have lunch or just do some work at my apartment instead of on campus. I have learned to open the blinds and let the sun shine in. Never will there be sunlight outside and light on in my apartment unless there is a storm or it is gloomy. The lights only go on when the sun sets. Reading and writing may be done near a window or even outside, whichever is your preference. In this manner, I end up saving half of what I would probably be using in electricity.
If you are living in a dorm room with a roommate and have separate TVs and/or refrigerators, attempt to consolidate and invest in one refrigerator. Label each of your items so that they are not confused and locate it in a common area for both of you to have access. Same goes with the television. From what I remember in college I hardly got to watch TV and one was definitely enough for me so there is no need to have a TV in each room. Again, use whichever TV and locate it in the common area so that both you and your roommate may enjoy it, as well as any guests you may have over.
One of the things that is a bit annoying about going away for college and living in an apartment is the fact that you?re usually only there for a couple semesters out of the entire year. Some students opt to stay during the summer while others return home for a break. Students at film schools in Canada, take heart! The student film festival circuit is alive and well at home and abroad. If you keep working hard in your film courses. Montreal, Toronto and the world may one day line up for the privilege to see the fruits of your labour. Here are some of the film festivals for you to consider submitting to while still in film school. Toronto International Film Festival, they may not be. But you have to start somewhere.
The Montreal Student Film & Video festival is for students of film schools in Canada. The goal is to discover new talent currently enrolled in film courses. Montreal also offers another student film festival, the Young Cuts Film Festival. Unlike the Montreal Student Film & Video Festival, which is only open to people at film schools in Canada, the Young Cuts Film Festival is open to students from around the world.
For Toronto students enrolled in film school, Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is a volunteer-run nonprofit that gives a chance for Toronto?s emerging filmmakers to showcase their work.
One film school, Toronto?s Deparment of Film in York University?s Faculty of Fine Arts, has a yearly juried showcase called CineSeige that is only open to the students in its own program.

Students of film schools in Canada can also submit to such international film festivals as the Beijing International Student Short Film and Video Festival or the Angelus Student Festival.
The world?s largest film festival, which is held at Brown University in Rhode Island, is also open to students at film schools in Canada.

You see, a Staples National Business Survey relayed by the Huffington Post finds that a staggering 67% of small business owners will be spending $2,000 or less in their marketing budgets in the next year. That?s?not a lot of money.

Community Kitchen: White Stone Bistro: A happy discovery

I knew I would like White Stone Bistro from the moment I spoke to chef/owner Regina Lorenz on the phone. I sensed from her voice that the restaurant would be a warm and hospitable place, and when Gordy and I arrived in the town of Rich Fountain (an hour?s drive south of Columbia) on a bitterly cold night and entered the coat room of the tiny bistro, my instinct about it was confirmed. Regina?s husband, Bob, took our coats and ushered us into the dining room where just four tables?two large and two small--filled the space. The restaurant is housed in what used to be the wine cellar of an old general store. Its low ceiling, warm wood, and stone walls make for a cozy atmosphere, which is only improved by the kindness of the proprietors. Regina cooked, Bob took our orders, and Tracy, Regina?s daughter, split her time between the kitchen and the dining room. All three came around to talk with us at various points during the meal.
In my mind, the intimacy and simplicity of the restaurant?s operation is one of its greatest charms. Guests must call ahead for reservations because the seating is limited and the restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday nights. The menu also shares in this scaled-down approach. The dinner selections change weekly, dependent on the availability of fresh ingredients, and consist of two appetizers, four main dishes, and two desserts. (The restaurant also offers a good wine and beer list.)
When we visited, we chose crostini with herb-crusted ch?vre from Goatsbeard Farm as our appetizer?although I was also quite tempted by the other offering, ravioli that Bob makes by hand. We considered our next course while nibbling on the crostini. Each entr?e comes with warm homemade bread, the sides of the week, and a salad course. Surprisingly, among the meal?s highlights were the salad dressings?also made in-house. Gordy ordered his favorite, blue cheese; Regina?s is particularly rich and flavorful, made from a Goatsbeard Farm blue. On Bob?s suggestion, I ordered the celery seed dressing, which has a lighter, slightly sweet flavor and is absolutely delicious.

Our main courses, whose accompanying sides were roasted potatoes and green beans, were simple but well-prepared. I had the saut?ed shrimp, and Gordy had the Kansas City strip steak. Meats, we learned, are Regina?s specialty; while my shrimp were very good, Gordy?s steak was a dream: juicy and tender with just the right amount of flavorful crust seared into it.
It must have been my state of after-dinner bliss--and most of a bottle of good red wine--that induced me, despite the fact that I was quite full, to order both the rich, chocolate ganache cake and the carrot cake for dessert. Both cakes were dense and moist and delicious, and despite our fullness, both somehow disappeared from their plates. Along with the dessert, Bob brought us complementary glasses of sherry and homemade limoncello--and a small bowl of Regina?s homemade granola, just so we could taste it.
When Regina asked how we had heard of White Stone, I was surprised that she clearly remembered my friends who had recommended the restaurant to us?not only their names, but also where they lived and what they did for work. After dinner, she addressed Gordy and I by name, gave us big hugs and told us to come back. I left White Stone Bistro feeling fuller than I?d been in a long time. I don?t mean only that my belly was full, but also that I was filled with a sense of well-being, a feeling that usually comes upon me only after a restful time spent with family or very dear friends.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress is getting ready to vote on extending a payroll tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for people out of work the longest, a showdown that many legislators hope will finally end a standoff that has dominated Washington since the fall.
Lawmakers were expecting the House and Senate to vote Friday on the $143 billion package, which also would forestall deep cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors. The tax cuts, jobless coverage and higher doctors' payments would all run through 2012.
Passage seemed virtually assured in the House and likely in the Senate, though questions about its fate there were growing amid defections by senators of both parties.
Approval would hand election-year bragging rights to President Barack Obama, who made the tax cut and jobless benefit extensions a cornerstone of his September jobs package, over objections from many Republicans.
Late Thursday, Obama praised both parties for the accord and urged lawmakers to approve the measure.
"There's much more the American people need and expect from us ? to help our businesses keep creating jobs, to help restore security for middle class families and to leave an economy that's built to last," the president said in a written statement that echoed themes of last month's State of the Union address.
Extending the 2 percentage-point cut in the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax would save around $80 monthly for someone earning $50,000 a year.
The vast number of voters who would benefit from that tax cut helped persuade many GOP lawmakers that opposition made little sense with presidential and congressional elections looming this fall. House Republicans blocked a two-month extension of the tax cut and jobless coverage in late December, only to retreat quickly under a buzz saw of opposition from conservative and GOP leaders from around the country.

"It will allow us to move forward on our agenda in the House," said freshman Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., a reference to GOP proposals for paring federal regulations and shrinking government.
"They've learned that it's politically stupid" to oppose the measure, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said of GOP lawmakers.

The bill also would prevent a 27 percent cut in federal payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients, a reduction that threatened to make it harder for seniors to find physicians.
That would cost about $18 billion. It would be paid for by trimming Medicare reimbursements to health care providers to cover unpaid medical bills, cutting payments to hospitals that treat large numbers of poor patients and cutting a fund created in Obama's health care overhaul for preventing diseases caused by smoking and obesity.
A House-approved measure letting states test unemployment benefit applicants for drug testing was pared back, permitting the tests only for people who lost their jobs due to drug use or whose new jobs would require such tests.
Those seeking unemployment coverage would have to show they are actively seeking work, but another GOP-backed provision forcing them to pursue high school equivalency diplomas was abandoned.
