Tyson on Zimmerman: 'It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet'

Tyson (Isaac Brekken/AP)

Mike Tyson thinks that George Zimmerman deserves violent retribution for the shooting of Trayvon Martin.

In an interview with Yahoo News about his upcoming one-man show in Las Vegas, the former heavyweight champion sounded off on the polarizing case:

"My personal feeling is that, as a young kid that was beat on by a bully, that was pretty much singled out?the guy [Zimmerman] stalked him, didn't follow instructions from a superior officer, when they said, 'Stop following the kid.' That tells you everything right there. But my all-around perspective, I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. But it's just so widespread and overt what happened. Even though this is the best country in the world, certain laws in this country are a disgrace to a nation of savages. It's a majority versus a minority. That's the way God planned it. He didn't want to do something about it, He wanted us to do something about it. And if we don't, it's gonna stay this way. We have to continue tweeting, we have to continue marching, we have to continue fighting for Trayvon Martin. If that's not the case, he was killed in vain, and we're just waiting for it to happen to our children. He'll have gotten away with impunity. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been dragged out of his house and tied to a car and taken away. That's the only kind of retribution that people like that understand. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet. Forget about him being arrested--the fact that he hasn't been shot yet is a disgrace. That's how I feel personally about it."

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, a beauty pageant contestant, and served three years in prison.

48 min.

When you think of laptops that are extremely thin and light, the MacBook Air is generally the first one that comes to mind. Apple's svelte aluminum notebook has been the most successful at bridging the gap between form and function, but it's not the only one trying. Intel is spending literally hundreds of millions of dollars to develop and promote super-thin notebooks, which it calls "ultrabooks."

The problem is they haven't quite caught on yet, at least not as much as the MacBook Air has. Lackluster early models and high prices have prevented "ultrabook" from becoming a household name. But Intel is just getting started. They say that there are 75 new models in the works, and that prices are dropping as well.

While the expensive components and materials needed to make ultrabooks and other thin, light laptops initially put the devices in the over-$1,000 range, Intel has always maintained that the price should be far lower, and expects some to be available for $700 or less by 2012's back-to-school season.

The 75 new models were not described one by one, but presumably Windows 8 and other factors are to be thanked for this great variety. Devices with touchscreens, depth-sensing webcams, convertible form factors, and other non-traditional designs (like the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga, pictured) are sure to be included alongside the usual suspects.

Most of the major laptop makers are planning ultrabook releases, as the attractive and portable form factor has been shown (mostly by Apple) to be a popular market.

IG: Customs shelling out millions in workers' comp | Insurance For ...

The Customs and Border Protection agency racked up more than $62 million in workers? compensation payments in 2010, due partly to inadequate oversight, according to the Homeland Security Department?s inspector general.

CBP?s poor management of compensation case files, incomplete reviews of bills and Labor Department reports, and missing documentation from claimants call into question the accuracy of millions of dollars in workers? comp claims during the past five years, the IG concluded in a new report.

?We attribute these deficiencies to CBP?s organizational structure, which may not be suited to effectively manage the number of [Federal Employees? Compensation Act] cases, and to the lack of policies and procedures that would ensure effective case management,? the IG report said.

FECA provides compensation for wage loss and medical care for those injured or killed on the job, helps employees return to work, and pays benefits to survivors. It covers 2.7 million federal employees and postal workers, and paid out $1.9 billion in wage-loss compensation, impairment and death benefits, and $898 million in medical and rehabilitation services and supplies during the 2010 chargeback year, which ended on June 30, 2010. The funds come from the Employees? Compensation Fund, and most agencies repay the money through chargeback bills from Labor.

The IG cited specific cases in which CBP failed to properly oversee its workers? comp program, at taxpayers? expense. For example, in the agency?s 2009 chargeback bill, there were 110 instances in which the claimants? Social Security numbers did not match CBP?s records. In addition, one claimant received workers? compensation totaling $45,581 over two years ? after the employee returned to work.

CBP lacked a uniform system for managing cases, using paper and electronic files in documentation, and housing the information in various locations. In its response to the IG report, the agency said it is moving completely to a Web-based system by 2014, and has filed claims electronically in its eComp system since 2009. CBP officials agreed with all the IG?s recommendations for improving oversight of the workers? comp program.

The agency also has beefed up its review system, James Tomsheck, CBP?s assistant commissioner in the Office of Internal Affairs, said in response to the report. CBP has recouped $3.4 million from other DHS agencies for erroneous 2009 workers? comp charges and has corrected mistakes related to Social Security numbers, he added. The agency also is developing a plan, to be completed this month, to review all disability cases where medical evidence indicates that employees could return to work. In 15 of 140 case files the IG reviewed, medical reports showed that the employees? doctors had cleared them to return to work, yet CBP paid those employees $951,195 in workers? comp.

The IG recommended CBP conduct a workload analysis to ensure it has sufficient staff to effectively manage FECA cases. A 2007 change in policy resulted in 14 injury compensation specialists responsible for managing 11,299 compensation cases on the 2010 chargeback bill ? an average of 802 cases per specialist. CBP plans to complete an assessment this summer of its workload and staff to improve claims processing.

Many agencies have struggled with effectively managing the federal workers? compensation program. Earlier this year, the Government Accountability Office released a report concluding that the program remains vulnerable to fraud, mostly due to limited access to data.

Under FECA, employees disabled on the job can receive 66 2/3 percent ? or 75 percent for those with dependents ? of their basic salary tax-free, plus medical-related expenses. The 66 2/3 percent rate is comparable to most state systems, but many federal recipients, including those past retirement age, receive the 75 percent compensation rate. Claimants cannot receive FECA benefits and certain other federal disability or retirement benefits at the same time; they must have benefits reduced to eliminate any duplicate payments. There is no age limit for receiving FECA benefits.

Many have criticized FECA, saying it is too generous and should be reformed so that employees receive lower benefits and return to work faster. The 1916 law has not been amended since 1974.

The House in November 2011 passed legislation that aims to provide greater support for some feds injured on the job and to make the workers? compensation program more accountable. On the Senate side, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved a postal reform bill ? also in November ? that includes provisions related to FECA. One measure, taken from legislation that Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, introduced in February, would convert employees on workers? compensation to the appropriate retirement system when they reach retirement age. It also would set the maximum compensation rate at 66 2/3 percent in most instances.

Pressure mounts on Bahrain as hunger striker reaches 62nd day

Bahrain has been trumpeting its return to normalcy ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix that begins April 20. But now there is increasing pressure to cancel the car race.

In most countries, the supercharged Formula One (F1) car-racing circuit is marked by decadent celebrations, high-profile guests, and hundreds of millions of dollars of international investment.

Bahrain missed out last year, when its plans to host the event were canceled after dozens of Arab Spring protesters were killed in clashes with security forces.
?
The tiny Gulf kingdom was determined not to miss out a second time, and declared ahead of this year?s April 20-22 event that all is back to normal. The country?s slogan, ?UniF1ed? ? united behind the F1 race, was draped on banners lining skyscrapers, highways, and shopping malls.

But activists are trying to leverage the event to garner international support for their campaign for greater rights, particularly for the country's downtrodden Shiite majority. Amid persistent abuses and the increasingly desperate hunger strike of prominent human rights activist Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, speculation is growing? that the race may be cancelled again.

For weeks leading up to the race, youths have gathered in the late afternoon in Shiite villages such as Abu Saiba to protest the event. Young men block the roads with debris, march through the streets until the security forces moved in by foot, and then retreat as tear gas rains down. Abaya-clad women scribble anti-F1 messages on the scarves they used to block tear gas from entering their mouths.

?We don?t want the F1 to be in Bahrain until the government respects human rights,? says Said Yousif, a leader at the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) who sees the event as a way to give undeserved legitimacy to the government. Youths use even more blunt language.

This is the true race in Bahrain: A contest between two very different ideas about where the country stands 14 months after protests first broke out. To activists and much of the Shiite population, political change has been denied and delayed, but is still worth fighting for.

But to the government and an increasingly political group of Sunnis who have traditionally been loyal to the regime, Formula One is a sign that the troubles of 2011 are over. "Formula One [is one effort] bringing Bahrain back to life,? says Sawsan Al-Shaer, a columnist who says the protests have degenerated to a few radicals. ?Before 2011, this was Bahrain. Now, we are [once again] back in Bahrain.?

The stakes aren't just about perception. The grinding conflict stands to set this developed country back for years. Investment has essentially halted amid the political uncertainty, say businessmen, who note that no data exist on just how bad things are. The political rhetoric and the clashes on the streets are also hardening, with hundreds injured, dozens dead, and untold numbers who have been arrested or traumatized. That instability is far from welcome in a country situated at the heart of global geopolitical tension: just off the coast of Saudi Arabia, across the Persian Gulf from Iran, and home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

Government supporters and several Sunni opposition groups date the end of the country's unrest to Nov. 23, when well-respected Egyptian Human Rights lawyer M. Cherif Bassiouni presented the findings of a government-commissioned Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) regarding the abuses that took place that year. The report was widely lauded for its extensive documentation of systematic abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and arbitrary arrest.

On March 25, a government-appointed follow-up committee reported on its first steps toward implementing the recommendations ? which many Sunnis saw as a sufficient concession to the protesters.

The bio-mechanisms of the woodpecker's resistance to head impact injury are an interesting scientific question. Professor FAN Yubo and his group from the Key Laboratory for Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of the Ministry of Education, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University, and the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology, set out to study this problem. After 3 years of innovative research, they are making progress in uncovering the explanation for the avoidance of head impact injury by woodpeckers. Their work, entitled "Comparative study of the mechanical properties, micro-structure, and composition of the cranial and beak bones of the great spotted woodpecker and the lark bird", was published in SCIENCE CHINA Life Sciences, 2011, Vol. 54 (11).

Head injury, caused by a sudden impact or by a change in the linear or angular velocity of the head, is a leading cause of morbidity and death in both industrialized and developing countries. It is estimated that brain injuries account for 15% of the overall burden of fatalities and disabilities and are the leading cause of death in young adults. Woodpeckers clearly are adapted to managing impact forces, allowing them to peck rapidly without incurring brain or eye injury. This ability has attracted wide attention not only by ornithologists and biologists but also by researchers in the mechanical and electronic sciences. Previous studies suggested that impact injury to the brain might be avoided by powerful muscles, or by drilling behavior, or by a special orientation of the brain within the skull compared with humans. However, there have been few systematic analyses of the properties of woodpecker's skull. Therefore, to understand how woodpeckers are adapted to pecking at high-speeds and frequency, the group carried out a comparative study of the mechanical properties, microstructure and composition of the cranial bone and beak of this bird, which represent remarkable examples of nanofabrication and self-assembly, perfected by natural evolution over millions of years.

The ultimate strength of woodpecker's cranial bone was found to be markedly higher than that of the lark. In contrast, there was no significant difference between the two birds in the ultimate strengths of their beaks. More plate-like spongy bone was present in the cranial bone of the woodpecker, while the cranium of the lark contained more rod-like structures. It appears that the mechanical properties and microstructure are closely linked. The larger number of plate-like structures, greater thickness and numbers of trabeculae, and the closer spacing between individual trabeculae in the woodpecker cranial bone would tend to resist deformation during pecking, which would decrease the stress on the brain. Conversely, the greater quantity of rod-like structures and thinner trabeculae of the woodpecker's beak would lead to greater deformation during impact. As the impact load is absorbed and distributed primarily by the beak, its transmission to the brain would be decreased. Together these parameters combine to produce quite similar ultimate strengths of the beaks of the woodpecker and the lark.

It was concluded that, compared with the lark, the cranial bone of the woodpecker achieves a higher ultimate strength and resistance to impact injury as a result of its unique microstructure, including more plate-like trabecular bone, greater thickness, greater numbers and closer spacing of trabeculae, and a higher proportion of bone mineral. These distinctive mechanical and structural properties, and compositions, of the cranial and beak bones of the woodpecker provide excellent resistance to head impact injury at a high speed and deceleration. Such information may perhaps inspire the design and optimization of protective headgear for humans.

8 Spring insurance hazards: Are you covered? ? Bill Haddox ...

Springtime is the season of warmer? temperatures, melting snow and soothing rain showers. While the mild weather is refreshing, it can also reveal damage inflicted by a long, cold and snowy winter. In addition, spring floods and hail damage can be the source of new headaches.

All of this can spell unexpected trouble if you?re a homeowner or driver, says Jack Hungelmann, author of ?Insurance for Dummies.?

?These problems are common, but home and auto insurance policies don?t always cover them,? he says.

Here are eight spring hazards that may or may not be covered by standard insurance policies.

1. Spring flooding

When winter snow starts to melt, rivers and creeks may rise. Mix in some spring rains, and there is potential for flooding in many parts of the country.

While a standard home insurance policy covers water damage from sudden occurrences ? such as burst pipes ? it will not cover destruction related to spring floods.

Fortunately, you can buy flood coverage from the Federal Emergency Management Agency?s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). These policies may cover the building, foundation and contents of a home. Pricing and availability details are at floodsmart.gov.

Flood insurance has restrictions, though, such as coverage limits and exclusions for basement improvements. And coverage usually does not kick in until 30 days after the insurance is purchased ? although there are exceptions to this waiting period, such as when a lender requires you to purchase flood insurance as part of a new home loan.

2. Ice dam damage

When wintry snow or rain falls, melts and refreezes on rooftops, ice on shingles can form a dam that causes subsequent snow melt or rainwater to back up.

Those backups may allow water to leak into the home and ruin walls. Fortunately, you can usually file a claim with your homeowners insurance.

?Water damage from ice dams generally would be covered, but check with your insurer to make sure you know the details of your policy,? says Mark Carrasquillo, an account executive with E.G. Bowman insurance company in New York.

While damage to our walls is likely to be covered, your insurance company will not pay to remove the ice dam itself from your roof.

3. Pothole damage

Driving through a pothole may ding up your car or cause damage, but you?re typically covered when you have collision coverage with your car insurance. If you don?t have coverage, however, you?re likely stuck with paying for the costs out of pocket.

4. Cracked driveways

The freezing and thawing of severe ice and snow could encourage cracks in your driveway come springtime. But those cracks are considered wear and tear, so you probably won?t be able to make an insurance claim for damage under a basic policy.

?Even so, read your insurance policy to make sure.? Don?t assume it?s not covered unless you see it in writing,? says Paul Neleman, vice president of sales and marketing for Actec Systems, a third party company in Atlanta that handles property and casualty claims intake for the insurance industry.

One exception is if your neighbor somehow damaged your driveway ? perhaps when laying out salt and sand to melt ice, Neleman says. In those cases, the neighbor?s homeowners insurance may end up responsible for the bill, he says.

5. Hail damage

Springtime storms can bring hail that destroys siding and roof shingles. Fortunately, homeowners are usually protected under their home insurance policies, says Hungelmann. And if a window breaks because of a storm, that?s typically covered too, along with resulting water damage, he says.

6. Flattened bushes, trees or landscaping

If a freak spring snowstorm flattens your prize bushes or spring rains wash away your landscaping, don?t expect home insurance to cover your losses.

?The repair of these items is usually considered maintenance on a home,? Carrasquillo says.

7. Rust damage from salt

Cars that drive through winter snow may become damaged due to the salt that?s used to help melt snow that?s fallen on busy streets. However, if the salt causes rust-related damage to your car, it?s usually considered wear and tear, and isn?t covered under typical auto insurance policies, says Carrasquillo.

The good news? Rust damage isn?t as much of a problem with newer cars as it was in the past, Carrasquillo says. But to be on the safe side, he recommends thoroughly washing any vehicle that?s exposed to salt or other potentially corrosive substances now that spring has arrived.

8. Damage from snow plows

If a snow plow operated by your local government takes out your mailbox or dings your car, your municipality would likely have a procedure in place for reimbursement, Neleman says. If this happens to you, he suggests checking with your local jurisdiction to learn how to file a claim.

If it?s your neighbor who damages your property with their snow removal equipment, they (and their homeowners insurance company) would likely have to pay, he says.

Green Valley Nevada Real Estate: Green Real Estate Case Study ...

As the founder for a think tank which happens to operate online, I generally have the final say in who gets to join, and who doesn't. I've been rather alarmed in recent years by the number of folks attempting to join who had taken environmentalism almost as some sort of religion without having all their facts straight. Further, far too many of them have been brainwashed by academia to the point that they don't even really know the true definition of capitalism, and have in mind this nonsense that money is evil, and free markets aren't fair.

Additionally, I am concerned with what happens when groups of like-minded people that do not understand reality get together in group-think designing what they believe to be the future utopia and epitome of human civilizations. They fail to realize their history, or how the real world works, rather they are more interested in talking about some sort of fantasyland, that someone else is going to pay for, and everyone is going to live happily ever after enjoying a heavenly existence. Okay so, let's talk and let me give you a case study and example here.

There was an interesting research paper put out by Deutsche Post DHL, a Futurist type Report on logistics titled; "The World in 2050," the press release appeared on February 27, 2012.
Anyway, the piece had an overview of 5-potential scenarios and in scenario one which is depicted as an; "Untamed Economy," with "Impending Collapse" the article stated;

"The world is characterized by unchecked materialism and mass consumption. This non-sustainable way of life is fed by the relentless exploitation of resources, a development that stokes climate change and causes natural disasters to mount. In a world characterized by tumultuous growth, demand for logistics and transport services climbs sharply. A global transportation supergrid ensures a rapid exchange of goods between centers of consumption. But as climate change advances, supply chains are increasingly disrupted, a development causing additional challenges for logistics companies."

Now then, I am not sure what type of fantasyland these folks are living in but I have some harsh and critical words for all this nonsense and global warming alarmism. You see, when I first heard about this report I was very excited in reading it, because I consider myself a Futurist in many regards, although I am not the type of Futurist who leans towards Plato utopian communistic theory. Further, to criticize consumption, is also to criticize capitalism, abundance, and all that the free-market can deliver.

It seems these utopians want to be free from want, and they want to make sure no one else can have what they want. That everyone should have only what they need to barely to survive, and nothing more, but that isn't what the human animal is about, nor does it take into consideration the innate characteristics of the species. We can't go around predicting the future without understanding the human animal. And we aren't going to be able to change the brain structure or the foundational genetics within to make people happy as minimalists by wishful thinking.

Now then, that's not saying we can't use genetic manipulation, drugs, pharmaceuticals, or future modification of the species to do it. But in that future aren't we really talking about turning human beings into a giant collective or Borg? Oh my gosh, 1984 here we come. As if all this nonsensical thinking wasn't enough, these futurist have to throw in the whole global warming religion issue, claiming there will be dystopia, or we can never reach our goals unless we do it their way, which happens to be destroying our energy infrastructure, changing the economic flows of civilization globally, changing the way we consume, the way we live, and submitting to the ultimate authority, namely their's.

It is interesting that the folks who were involved in this project, and this collaborative futurist work have played their hand, and now we see what they want to do, they want to control every aspect of our lives, tell us what we can and cannot have, hijack our energy infrastructure, and then promise us they will deliver what we need, which is what we will in the future agree to if we adopt their global warming religion. You only have to read between the lines just a little bit to see what's going on here, and it should scare you. If it doesn't scare you, I would submit to you that you are not paying attention.

In fact, most of the challenges we have in our economy, supply chain, and free-market system have to do with the same sorts of folks with their left leaning thinking trying to manipulate the flows of money, labor, production, and capital. It is obvious they want to do this well into the future, and if they aren't allowed to, they claim that we are all going to die because of global warming, that we will live some sort of a terrible existence. Well, I have news for you, all those folks who have promoted a utopian society in the past, trying to create something that will last for 1000 years - well, we've all seen what has happened, and mankind is not the better for their exploits, and exploratory projects with human civilization.

The reality is that when you look at the United States and the free-market system, and as we practice capitalism to our best ability, although we do fall down at times, we have created massive abundance, and it's worked quite well. This is the model we should follow, and anything to destroy this model is a threat to America's future. If those folks want to run their little game plan, and create their little communist nation state, or the folks in Belgium want to create a unified Europe, then let them go try, but as I look out around the world now, I see their projects have failed time and time again. And personally I don't think the United States should be bailing them out, or joining in cahoots with a nonsensical dream, or a new environmental religion.

It is obvious what works, and what hasn't worked. Capitalism has worked, socialism and communism haven't, and therefore we should all take notice and move forward into the future of humankind with that knowledge. We should not dismiss it, deny it, or trample on that truth. The problem with goody-two-shoed environmentalist futurism is that all their theories are flawed, and their foundation is baseless nonsense - it's all a house of cards, and if you fall for it, the Joker of dystopia wins. Please consider all this and think on it.

American Bar Association to honor Texas Supreme Court, executive director of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation

The American Bar Association on April 18 will present an award to the Texas Supreme Court for its effort to preserve state funding for legal aid programs.

?We?ve been working diligently to increase the effort of providing services to indigent Texans. If this recognition can further those efforts here in Texas, or serve as a model in other states, we?re very pleased about that,? says Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson about winning a 2012 ABA Grassroots Advocacy Award.

Another Grassroots Advocacy Award is going to Betty Balli Torres, executive director of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation. She says she feels honored to win the award but she feels the credit should to go to ?an entire team effort.?

The high court is winning the award because in 2011, its ?actions were just so critical in getting the Texas Legislature to appropriate money? to fund legal-aid services for indigent Texans, says ABA spokesman Rob Boisseau.

Texas Lawyer reported during the 2011 legislative session that Jefferson and Justice Nathan Hecht sent a letter and visited lawmakers to communicate that the state?s civil justice system would be in grave danger if legislators did not fund indigent legal aid.

Boisseau says Balli Torres is winning the award because, among other things, a couple of years ago she worked to lobby Congress to pass a bill to fully insure Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts, which fund legal-aid organizations across the nation.

Balli Torres explains she was president of the National Association of IOLTA Programs when she lobbied for the bill. Without full insurance, lawyers may not have deposited client funds in IOLTA accounts, leading to devastating funding cuts for the legal-aid groups that rely on interest from those accounts.

Sugar production switch in liver may offer target for new diabetes therapies

ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2012) ? In their extraordinary quest to decode human metabolism, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have discovered a pair of molecules that regulates the liver's production of glucose -- -- the simple sugar that is the source of energy in human cells and the central player in diabetes.

In a paper published April 8 in Nature, the scientists say that controlling the activity of these two molecules -- -- which work together to allow more or less glucose production -- -- could potentially offer a new way to lower blood sugar to treat insulin-resistant type II diabetes. They showed, through an experimental technique, that this was possible in diabetic mice.

"If you control these switches, you can control the production of glucose, which is really at the heart of the problem of type 2 diabetes," says Professor Marc Montminy, head of Salk's Clayton Foundation Laboratories for Peptide Biology.

The need for new drugs is accelerating, says Montminy, as almost 26 million Americans have type II diabetes, and an estimated 79 million people are at risk of developing the condition. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and treatment costs are estimated at $116 billion annually.

In order to develop new and effective treatments for diabetes, researchers need to understand the complex and delicate biology behind human metabolism as well as the disorders that develop when this finely tuned system is out of balance, Montminy says.

During the day, humans burn glucose, derived from the food we eat. This is the fuel that supplies the muscles and other parts of the body expending energy. At night, when we sleep, we revert to stored fat as a source of very dependable but slowly released energy. But certain parts of the body, most notably the brain, require glucose as a source of energy, even when we fast.

Pancreatic islet cells control both sides of this energy equation. Located in the pancreas, they produce glucagon, a hormone released during fasting, to tell the liver to make glucose for use by the brain. This process is reversed when we feed, and when the pancreatic islets release insulin, which tells the liver to stop making glucose.

Thus glucagon and insulin are part of a feedback system designed to keep blood glucose at a stable level.

Montminy's lab has for years focused on the central switches that control glucose production in the liver and others that control glucose sensing and insulin production in the pancreas. Among his key findings is that glucagon -- -- the fasting hormone -- -- turns on a genetic switch (CRTC2) that ramps up production of glucose in the blood. In turn, when insulin is increased in the blood, activity of CRTC2 is inhibited, and the liver produces less glucose.

"But in insulin-resistant type II diabetic individuals, the CRTC2 switch is turned on too strongly because the insulin signal is not getting through," Montminy says. "As a result, the liver produces too much glucose and the level of glucose in the blood stream is too high. Over a period of 10 to 20 years, the abnormal elevation of glucose leads to chronic complications including heart disease, blindness and kidney failure."

The new findings in the Nature study identify a relay system that explains how glucagon activates the CRTC2 switch during fasting, and how that system is compromised during diabetes.

The scientists say this relay system involves a molecular receptor (IP3) on the outside of liver cells that they call a "molecular spigot." Glucagon opens the IP3 spigot during fasting, allowing an increase in calcium, a common signaling molecule in the cell. This stimulates a molecular gas pedal, of sorts, known as calcineurin, which revs up CRTC2, activating genes that allow the liver to drive the metabolic engine by producing more glucose.

This is important, Montminy says, because the team also discovered that activity of the IP3 receptor and calcineurin in the liver are increased in diabetic insulin resistance, resulting in more blood sugar.

The findings therefore suggest that agents that can selectively damp down activity of the IP3 spigot and the calcineurin accelerator might help to shut down the CRTC2 switch and to lower blood sugar in type II diabetic patients, he says. That is precisely what happened when the researchers used these compounds on liver cells.

"We obviously have a lot of work to do to find out whether such a strategy might work in humans," he says.

The research team includes investigators from Salk Institute, Columbia University, University of California San Diego and University of Ottawa. In addition to Montminy, the coauthors on the paper are Yiguo Wang, Gang Li, Jason Goode, Jose Paz, Kunfu Ouyang, Robert Screaton, Wolfgang Fischer, Ju Chen and Ira Tabas.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Kieckhefer Foundation, the Clayton Foundation for Medical Research and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Pakistani troops dig for 135 missing in avalanche

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Rescue workers used bulldozers Sunday to dig through huge banks of snow following a massive avalanche a day earlier that engulfed a military complex and buried at least 135 people, most of them soldiers, in a mountain battleground close to the Indian border.

More than 24 hours after the disaster at the entrance to the Siachen Glacier, no bodies have yet been recovered, military officials said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The army said 240 troops and civilians worked at the scene Sunday with the aid of sniffer dogs and heavy machinery, some of which was flown in on military aircraft. They struggled to dig through some 25 meters (80 feet) of snow, boulders, mud and slush that buried the rear headquarters building in the Gayari sector early Saturday morning.

Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited the site Sunday to supervise rescue operations. At least 124 soldiers from the 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion and 11 civilian contractors are missing.

The U.S. expressed its condolences and offered to help with the search and rescue operation.

The accident in Siachen, which is on the northern tip of the divided Kashmir region claimed by both India and Pakistan, highlighted the risks of deploying troops to one of the most inhospitable places on earth.

The thousands of soldiers from both nations stationed there brave viciously cold temperatures, altitude sickness, high winds and isolation for months at a time. Troops have been posted at elevations of up to 6,700 meters (22,000 feet) and have skirmished intermittently since 1984, though the area has been quiet since a cease-fire in 2003. The glacier is known as the world's highest battlefield.

The headquarters in Gayari, situated at around 4,572 meters (15,000 feet), is the main gateway through which troops and supplies pass on their way to other more remote outposts in the sector. It is situated in a valley between two high mountains, close to a military hospital, according to an officer who was stationed there in 2003.

More soldiers have died from the weather than combat on the glacier, which was uninhabited before troops moved there.

Conflict there began in 1984 when India occupied the heights of the 78-kilometer (49-mile)-long glacier, fearing Pakistan wanted to claim the territory. Pakistan also deployed its troops. Both armies remain entrenched despite the cease-fire, costing the poverty-stricken countries many millions of dollars each year.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since the partition of the subcontinent on independence from Britain in 1947. Two of the wars have been over Kashmir, which both claim in its entirety.

Being Grand, Food Choices, Cooking, Recipes, Eating Healthy Food ...

Today's is son Tim's birthday. It was a lucky day for me the day he was born, because through the years this boy to man has gifted me with so much joy that I can't begin to thank him. He is one of those sons that moms hope and wish for. Tim feels deeply and is kind and sensitive. He's willing and eager to help. He has a big heart. Tim makes his mother proud every day. He is a good son, and today is the day we celebrate his birthday.

Tim loves a hot cup of coffee, and this got me thinking.

  • How Do You Make a Great Cup of Coffee?
  • Coffee Grounds or Beans?
  • How to Best Store Coffee?
  • Is Drinking Coffee Healthy?

How Do You Make a Great Cup of Coffee?

Making a simple pot of coffee has haunted me for years. My coffee just doesn't turn out well. It's usually too weak or too strong. Now these two problems can probably be remedied fairly easily with a little try-and-testing of measurements. BUT? my coffee is also bitter, not so good to the taste buds. I discovered that coffee making, coffee storage and a bit of salt makes a huge difference.

The National Coffee Association reports that the quality and flavor of coffee is not only determined by the brewing process and storage, but also by the type of coffee you select. That makes sense. Buy cheap coffee and get a cheap cup of coffee taste. Hmmm

Here's what the NCA recommends:

1. You want a good coffee maker
2. Fresh roasted coffee
3. Fresh ground coffee from beans you grind
4. Filtered or bottled water
5. Right balance of coffee to water
6. 3 to 5 minutes of brewing time
7. Serve in warmed coffee cup or mug

Time-Tested Recipe on How to Make a Great Cup of Coffee

Ingredients
36 ounces filtered water
12 tablespoons freshly ground coffee
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions
Pour water into the water chamber of the coffee maker. Place coffee into an unbleached paper filter and sprinkle with salt. Turn coffee maker on. Wait until all the water has filtered through and the pot is full.

Makes six (6-ounce) cups of coffee

After coffee brews, remove it from the pot and store brewed coffee in a thermos or air-tight container if you don't plan to drink it up within a short time.

Coffee Grounds or Beans?

We are busy people. That's our excuse for only using our coffee grinder on days off and holidays. The rest of the time, we use bagged coffee that's already ground. I love Dunkin Donuts coffee, and my honey loves Starbucks brew.

Unfortunately coffee begins to lose its freshness as soon as it's roasted and you open the bag. That's why bagged ground coffee is best consumed within one to two weeks. Whole beans are best within one month of roasting. To keep your ground coffee or your coffee beans fresh as long as possible, you want to store your coffee properly.

How to Best Store Coffee
There are popular misconceptions in regard to how coffee should be stored. The bitterness of roasted coffee comes from moisture, air, light and heat. Storing your coffee away from these elements keeps it fresher longer. Therefore, an airtight container stored in a cool, dry, dark place is the best environment for your coffee.

Freezing Coffee. Some people store their coffee in the freezer thinking it is going to keep the coffee fresh. Not a good idea. When you break down the oils in coffee by freezing, you are removing the flavor.

Think about it...if coffee tasted better and fresher from the freezer, then you would buy it in the frozen food section, your local coffee shop might look more like an ice cream parlor, and our power bills would be through the roof trying to maintain a meat-locker the size of a warehouse.

Best Coffee Storage Locations. Cool, dark, dry places (such as pantries and cabinets) are best for coffee storage. Warm spots, like above/next to the oven or in cabinets that get hot from exposure to sunlight or cooking equipment. Countertops that are away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat can be appropriate if you use opaque, airtight storage containers.

If you buy a larger quantity of coffee, store the bulk of it tightly sealed in an airtight container in a cool, dark area and keep a smaller quantity in a smaller container for daily use. Only open the large container to refill the smaller container. Storing coffee this way reduces air exposure for the larger portion coffee.

Coffee Container Types: Once coffee?s original packaging is opened, coffee loses its freshness quickly. Glass, ceramic or non-reactive metal containers with airtight gaskets are ideal for storing coffee.

Coffee can be stored fresh in clear, glass canisters or clear plastic ware only if the canisters are kept in a cool, dark place. For countertop storage, opaque, airtight containers are best.

Is Drinking Coffee Healthy?

Researchers investigated regular coffee drinking to see if it helps people live longer. For the study, they looked at 485 people with high blood pressure (BP) or hypertension between 65 and 100 years. Hypertension stiffens arteries and reduces elasticity, increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes, the study said. This is one of the reasons we stopped drinking coffee all day long, which ended up with a coffee consumption of 10 or more cups of coffee a day. Yikes!

Luckily for us, the study also revealed that those who were moderate coffee drinkers, consuming between one and two cups a day, had the best arterial health with their blood vessels having the elasticity of younger people. That's me and my honey. We now limit our coffee to two cups a day. We've been keeping this limit now for about three years.
