The comeback brands of 2013

8 hrs.

Powerful brands easily stagnate, playing it too safe with a strong product and failing to innovate or keep up with the times. These former icons either fade into relative obscurity or dust themselves off. We?ve seen several flashy comebacks in the last few years: a heritage deodorant line?s revitalized ?Old Spice Guy,? the revival of GM?s Chevrolet, and the renewed celebrity of former President Bill Clinton, star of the 2012 campaign trail.

Which elapsed products, struggling companies or forgotten personalities will revive their brands in 2013? Marketing and branding experts cast their votes for the next big comeback stories.

Myspace
The original social network may be poised for a rebound, after being purchased from News Corp. by performer Justin Timberlake and a group of investors last year. A two-minute teaser video released in September prominently features Timberlake and reveals the new design as photo and entertainment focused. Users are asked to request an invitation to the reimagined site. With Google+?s struggle to get off the ground and Facebook?s flubbed IPO this year, TalkPoint Marketing VP Dan Roche believes Myspace has a real shot at comeback success in 2013. ?They have the advantage of an established name brand, infrastructure and experience,? he says. ?With the influx of new blood, they can make inroads into the Facebook dominance.?

Tiger Woods
?Woods? brand hit the fan in 2009, when we saw his personal life blow up in front of us,? says Kelly O?Keefe, chief creative officer at media agency CRT/tanaka and a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University?s Brandcenter. ?Then, even worse, his [golf] game blew up in 2010 and 2011.? However, this year he started performing better on the green and saw his earnings bounce back to $4.4 million in winnings and $55 million in endorsements, making him the world?s third highest-paid athlete. With the return of his game and his confidence, O?Keefe believes consumers are ready to forgive his personal failings and support his career redemption. Plus, ?in light of drunk-driving manslaughters, murder/suicides, doping and lying by other athletes, Tiger?s marital infidelities are starting to look tame by comparison,? he says.

Furby Toys
?It?s unlikely that the same toy will be popular year after year without a redesign,? says Charles R. Taylor, a marketing professor at Villanova University?s School of Business in Pennsylvania. He points to best-selling Barbie, who?s had 130 careers and a revolving closet, as the model of smart brand reinvention. Now Hasbro, the maker of GI Joe and Mr. Potato Head, is staging a revival of its 14-year-old Furby toy. A new redesigned line was launched in September, equipped with several high-tech add-ons: LED-lit eyes, touch sensors that trigger movement, adaptable personality traits and a companion iPhone app. Taylor says they?ve sold extremely well during the 2012 holiday season, and with an online campaign centered on social media and Furby.com, he expects the toys will be everywhere next year.

The GOP
The GOP?s recent presidential loss will likely catalyze a reinvention, says Karen Post, author of "Brand Turnaround: How Brands Gone Bad Return to Glory"and a self-identified moderate Republican. She believes the party has suffered from a lack of diversity, narrow messaging and too little Web and social media interaction. ?A political party is like any big brand,? she says, using Nike as an analogy. ?While Nike has its one thing people associate it with, they spend millions segmenting consumers. The GOP is not grasping that.? Republicans will spend 2013 trying to reach both younger and minority voters, she says, by ramping up social media efforts and recruiting new, diverse spokespeople.

Ford Motor Company?s Lincoln
While the Lincoln Town Car was once a staple of luxury and comfort, it?s become associated with stodginess. ?Younger buyers don?t want to buy it,? says marketing expert Taylor. Ford hopes to reposition the brand with its new Lincoln MKZ model targeting Gen X consumers. Every successful comeback campaign starts with product innovation, says Taylor, and so far critics are responding positively. Car and Driver gave it a 4.5 rating on a 5-point scale. Ford is also launching an edgy ad campaign, with one commercial showing an old Town Car in flames and the new model rising like a phoenix from the ashes. Also, comedian Jimmy Fallon is creating a 60-second Super Bowl ad for the model, which he?s crowd-sourcing ideas for on Twitter. ?They?re taking big risks,? says Taylor, who predicts they?ll pay off in 2013.

Twinkies
The news of Twinkie-maker Hostess Brands? bankruptcy caused a tidal wave of publicity and nostalgia that may help the sweet treat relaunch in 2013. With companies like Wal-Mart and Kroger reportedly making bids on the business, it?s likely that the Twinkie will have a new owner and a renewed consumer base next year. ?There?s so much tradition and equity in the brand that someone will buy it,? says Taylor. However, for a successful comeback, he believes its new parent will have to break the negative association with junk food by either brand extensions or a smart marketing campaign.

Yahoo
The former darling of the tech world faltered in the last several years, suffering from constant volatility at the top?with five CEOs in just five years. However, Rob Scalea, CEO of brand strategy consultancy The Brand Union, believes it could return to its former glory in the year ahead. ?Yahoo made a big coup by recruiting ex-Googler Marissa Mayer,? he says of its new CEO. ?She has brought a new-found focus and a clear strategy: Yahoo! will be a product company with a huge emphasis on mobile.? He cites the reinvention of Yahoo Mail, rumored discussions with Facebook about creating a common social search engine, and a new Flickr app, which positions it to compete with photo-sharing service Instagram, as strong signs of a company comeback.

911 Small Business Marketing Help: Maximizing Facebook for ...

This is part 1 of Maximizing Facebook for Business. We are in an amazing time in history where we can tap into the power of social networks like Facebook to build our business.

But, how do you?do it in a professional manner??I'm sure you have seen others post update messages continuously about their product or opportunity so much that it turns you off. And you know if it turns you off that it is turning others off as well.

Here are?5 steps to get you closer to opening your network of influence?instead of closing it down.

Today we are going to talk about your PERSONAL PROFILE. Yes, if you have a business, ?you do need to maximize your personal profile. Before I discuss the steps... first and foremost you want to separate your personal and business. Facebook operates that a personal profile is just that. I've seen several businesses operate with a personal profile that it's unreal. FIRST off it will hurt your business. Secondly, Facebook has the right to shut your profile down if you use it incorrectly.

Now, on to personal profiles...

Your business is an extension of who you are. Most of your family and friends want to support your business venture. So let's get the most out of this great social tool.

1 - Make sure your profile is up to snuff

Your goal is have people?know, like and trust you. You should have pictures of you being happy. You want to set a positive image for yourself. Your profile picture should be friendly and professional looking. Don't change it too much. It is like your logo. It shows up anytime you post something. Be dressed in colors that complement you. It is ok to have your spouse in your picture if you are worried about weird folks stalking you.

One of my accountability partners has a picture of him kissing his wife as his. He is networking online with a lot of other ladies. This sends a clear message that he is happily taken. Another very attractive lady and business leader has a studio shot of her and her husband. She is in the public eye a lot and wants to send a clear message that she is happy married. That is ok (for Facebook not LinkedIn though). Not ideal... but ok if you are worried about it.

2 - Check out your header image

Change your header image to reflect you and things you are working on. If you have a special company event coming up... feel free to change your header to reflect the city you are going to. This summer I posted a bucket list of things we were going to do. At holiday time you can post something to reflect the holidays. Feel free to put text into your photo if it will benefit. Examples include a quote or well wishes. If you do put words in your header, keep it simple. It should never be a?blatant?advertisement though.

3 - Maximize your job space

Make sure your ?job? under your profile picture shows your business and is viewable by others searching you out. To fix that, click on About. Then click Edit under Work and Education. You want the link to go to your Business Facebook page. It might auto populate the page when you start typing the page name. Otherwise you might need to use the actual website address. If you need help here, email me. In the description box you can add website addresses without the http://. Just remember these will not show on your profile page. These only show on your About page.

4 - Double check who can see your profile

You also might need to adjust your privacy settings on who can find you or message you. You don't want a possible customer who has gone through the trouble to look you up not be able to message or contact you. To adjust, go to the upper right of your screen to the down pointing triangle and click on it. Click on privacy settings.

5 - Keep it talking

Now on to activity. You want to post about 50% personal and 50% business or 75% personal and 25% business. You want to share great, wonderful things. Never rant or post controversial things. In my opinion, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Sometime things get misunderstood or taken out of context super quick.

So for the 50-25% of business related posts... you want to make it appeal to a wide audience. I personally only post about 25-10% business related. I don't want people to unfriend or hide me due to my posts. I keep them generic. When folks like, comment or share on posts I know they are reading my stuff. I'll either comment back to them or I will private message them to engage in a conversation. Also you can see who is online by having the Chat turned on. My goal is to have business conversations either on my business Facebook page or in private messages... hardly ever on my personal page.

Next time I will discuss Facebook business pages and groups as well as finding folks to connect with, so stay tuned.

PS. If you are reading this post in 2013... be sure to join us for our Business Accountability Challenge. Read more about it here. It's never too late to jump in!

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine Brews Up A Social ... - Business Insider

Dave Mustaine, lead singer of heavy metal band Megadeth (and formerly of Metallica), has gotten 8,600 likes for a 428-word rant against suit retailer Men's Wearhouse. His beef? He bought his manager a gift certificate that was not delivered in time for Christmas.

Not cool, Men's Wearhouse!

Mustaine has vowed to boycott the chain whose founder, George Zimmerman, promises, "You're going to like the way you look; I guarantee it":

We are all living in very tight financial times right now, and like I said, you may not wear a suit for your job or for an event or occasion, but if you do, I would strongly recommend you wear someone else?s suits. Go to Jos. A Bank instead. I for one, will never set foot in a Men?s Warehouse, even for shelter from a blizzard.

I absolutely GUARANTEE it.

The company -- doubtless knowing that failing to respond to this sort of thing can go viral very quickly -- left a message offering to help Mustaine on his Facebook page on Jan. 2, and also tweeted at him. "

Megadeth fans, meanwhile, have filed 1,300 comments on Mustaine v. Men's, and they're about evenly mixed between those laughing at him and those laughing with him.

Here's the post, in case it disappears:

Rare Water-Rich Mars Meteorite Discovered

1. How do we know that a rock is from Mars, especially when its composition is different from what we've found on Mars to date.

Isotope ratios and certain element ratios. These depend on the history of a planetary body, and you can rule out every planet / asteroid but Mars. I always liked the conclusion in this paper [sciencedirect.com]:

There seems little likelihood that the SNCs are not from Mars. If they were from another planetary body, it would have to be substantially identical to Mars

Of course, there is no such other Mars in the solar system.

The existence and composition of little atmospheric inclusions (i.e., tiny little bits of Martian air trapped in the rock) were another convincing piece of evidence for the Mars meteorites, as was the evidence of alteration by water.

2. How do rocks leave Mars' gravity well in the first place? Are they shrapnel from Mars being hit by big meteorites?

In a way. Suppose you have a big meteor hit (the size of the one that formed the Baringer Meteor Crater, or bigger). The meteor drills into the body and goes beneath the surface. At some point, it is stopped, and it dumps its kinetic energy into the body of the planet (i.e., for big impacts the meteorite explodes at depth). The shock wave is roughly spherical, and so the part directed upwards lifts up the surface above where the meteorite hit. Most of this material is lifted not much more than the depth of the explosion, forming the characteristic lip of the crater, and typically turning the layers in the rock upside down at the lip. Some of this material can be accelerated to much higher velocities, however, forming (for example) the rays of the new craters on the Moon. If the meteorite is really big, some of the surface material is accelerated to escape velocity and away it goes. After a little while (a few dozen to no more than a million years), some material will hit another planet. Mars and Earth have been trading material like this for the life of the solar system.

The really amazing thing is that some of the material ejected is not treated too roughly. Spores and seeds etc. could definitely survive the trip.

Saving money on your mortgage in 2013

Saving money on your mortgage in 2013

Jack Guttentag
Inman News?

Editor's note: This is the first of a multipart series.

This series of articles is about opportunities available to consumers to save money on an existing mortgage, or on a new one they plan to take in the near future. This one is about unexploited refinance opportunities.

Interest rates have been at historically low levels for some time now and some borrowers have refinanced two or three times, but there are others who so far have allowed the opportunity to pass them by. I am not referring to borrowers who can't possibly meet today's standards. They haven't refinanced because they can't. My focus is on those who can refinance profitably but don't for a variety of reasons.

Erroneous beliefs: The following beliefs that prevent or discourage refinancing have been related to me by borrowers. All are false:

  • Borrowers have to wait some minimum period after taking a mortgage before they can refinance.
  • The borrower who refinances loses the benefit of principal payments already made.
  • The borrower who paid points to reduce the interest rate on the current mortgage should wait until such time as the interest savings have at least covered the cost of the points.
  • The borrower who has had a mortgage for a long time has to begin the process from scratch, delaying the period until they are out of debt.
  • It is better for a borrower who has been making extra payments to continue that practice, rather than refinance.

Readers will find explanations of why these notions are wrong on my website at "Valid and invalid reasons for not refinancing."

Unrealistic fear of adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs): There are borrowers with fixed-rate mortgages (FRMs) who would not profit from refinancing into another FRM, but who would profit from refinancing into a lower-rate ARM -- but they don't because of fear of a possible future ARM rate increase. In many cases, this fear is not justified because the borrower can pay off the loan within the initial fixed rate period on the ARM, which can be five, seven or 10 years.

To execute this strategy, the borrower must have the capacity to make payments larger than the required payment on the ARM. There is always a payment large enough to pay off the loan fully within the initial ARM rate period, the question being the borrower's capacity to make that payment. The previous payment on the FRM might be large enough to do the trick, or it might not.

Even if the borrower can't pay off completely within the initial rate period, paying a higher rate for a few years on a much reduced balance will not come close to wiping out the interest savings during the preceding years.

For more on this topic, read "Refinancing from FRMs into ARMs."

Failure to exploit a profitable investment opportunity: Many mortgage borrowers can't refinance profitably, or think they can't, because their house has declined in value and a refinance would require the purchase of mortgage insurance, which they don't have now. However, if they have investment assets that can be liquidated to pay down their mortgage balance, the rate of return on investment will be far higher than the return they are earning on those assets now. This is called "cash-in refinancing" because the borrower is putting cash into the transaction, as opposed to cash-out refinancing where the borrower withdraws cash.

Here is an example: John has a 6 percent mortgage with 300 months to go and a $100,000 balance, but his house is worth only $100,000, which makes him ineligible for a refinance. However, if he pays down the balance to $80,000, he can refinance into a 4.5 percent loan with closing costs of 2 percent. If he stays in the house for five years, the rate of return on his investment, consisting of $20,000 in balance paydown plus $1,600 in closing costs, would be 9.98 percent. The return is riskless to the borrower.

The return on investment can be calculated using Mortgage Cash-in Refinance Calculator 3f on my site.

Rejected and gave up: Some borrowers have not refinanced because they tried and were rejected, and then gave up. But not all rejections are created equal -- depending on the reason, some deficiencies are fixable. Here are a few:

  • You met the underwriting standards of the federal agencies (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA) but not those of the particular lender who rejected you. Some lenders have "overlays" that impose more restrictive requirements than those of the agencies, and where this is the case, you might well be approved by going to another lender.
  • You were rejected because your credit score was too low for reasons that are quickly remediable. Examples would be scores lowered by a reporting mistake, or by credit card balances that are large relative to the maximums.
  • You were rejected because your equity in the property was too small based on a faulty appraisal. A new appraisal obtained through a different lender could provide a different outcome.
  • You were rejected because your debt-to-income ratio was too high and you have the means to reduce it ? for example, by borrowing against a 401(k) in order to pay down other debt.

For more on this topic, see "Refinance rejection: Can anything be done?"

Flood program to run dry without congressional action: FEMA

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The flood insurance program will run out of money to pay claims for Hurricane Sandy and other disasters in coming days unless Congress lets it borrow more funds, the national emergency agency said on Thursday.

The warning from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) came a day ahead of a vote by the House of Representatives on a $9 billion payment on storm-related support for the National Flood Insurance Program.

House Speaker John Boehner reversed course and scheduled Friday's vote after fellow Republicans from states hit hard by the October 29 storm slammed him for failing to bring the payment up for a vote earlier this week.

FEMA has told Congress that unless its borrowing ceiling was raised, "funds available to pay claims will be exhausted sometime around the week of January 7, 2013," the agency said in a one-sentence statement.

The FEMA program is essentially the only U.S. flood insurer for residences. It has a $20.8 billion ceiling for borrowing authority.

FEMA estimated Sandy-related flood losses of $6 billion to $12 billion in November, far beyond its cash and $3 billion in untapped borrowing authority.

The House will hold a second vote on January 15 on the $51 billion remainder of the $60 billion Sandy disaster aid package approved by the Senate last week.

Putting more money into the program would come months after President Barack Obama signed a law aimed at improving its finances. Congress bailed out the program after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and it is $18 billion in debt.

Sandy, the second-costliest storm in U.S. history, devastated the northeastern United States, with New York and New Jersey the hardest-hit states.
