Exploring the Vermillion River Bottoms By Mountain Bike or Fat Bike

I recently took a bike trip back to one of my favorite areas to fish and hunt when I was a kid.? This area known as the Vermillion River Bottoms located in Ravennah Township near the abandoned town of Etter.? It is part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and is very reminiscent of a southern bayou with its vast floodplain forests.? I've always wanted to get back here and do some mountain biking and venture through the woods like I used to do years ago.? So I took some of the country gravel roads from Hastings down to the Vermillion River South Public Water Access just off the Ravennah Trail and started exploring.? Refer to the map for access location.
I headed north near the boat launch on an ATV trail that starts here and proceeds into the woods along the river bank.? The trail quickly disappears amongst all of the fallen leaves on the ground.? From here it is up to you to blaze your own trail, but as long as the ground is not frozen beware of deep mud along some of the small creeks leading into the river.?
I backtracked back to the boat launch and went up to the road to cross the bridge to the east side of the river.? Just past the bridge on the north side of the road is a dirt access road that leads down to the riverbank.

I followed this rutted and sometimes muddy path north and east along the narrow river channel off of the main part of the river.? The trail soon became wider from 4-wheeler and ATV use.

Eventually I came to Spring Banks Lake where I passed a beaver dam at the south end of the lake.

If you are feeling adventurous or you have a fat bike, you can cross the narrow shallow channel just south of the beaver dam on Spring Banks Lake and venture into more bayou like floodplain woods.? A frozen river channel as winter approaches will make this crossing much easier without getting wet in the process.
I pressed on northward along the border of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area on the east side of the lake through an area ripe with fallen logs to cross and trees to dodge.? If you are moving through this area with any speed it will test your sightline decision making skills.?
Once through this area I came upon a trail in the woods that started out wide and narrowed the further I went along until it was heavy with trees.? I meandered around the area for a little while looking for the best possible travel paths through the thick trees dodging branches, thickets and logs.
Eventually I worked my way back to the bridge and passed under it to check out the area on the other side.? There was a small hill to climb and once over it I entered a sparsely wooded area that contained fine sand covered with leaves.? Most of the sand was well packed and travel through here was quite easy with very few downed trees.
After about 300 yards I came to the eastern border of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and the woods turned to a grassy field area along the river bank.??
I turned back at the border and rode around for a bit in woods I had just come from and saw border markings and No Trespassing signs along an old fence.? I made sure to stay to the west of this line to stay in public lands.

Heading back to the bridge, I took this photo to show the large island area that will remain unexplored until the eastern channel freezes over allowing dry passage onto it.
If you don't know the area it can be easy to get turned around and not know where you are at.? I recommend exploring with a GPS or GPS enabled smartphone using apps such as My Trails, Endomondo Sport Tracker Pro, MapMyRide or any iPhone app that allows you to track your ride.? Use these to find your way back in the event you get lost or aid you to head the right direction.? I used My Trails to map out and track where I explored and it was very helpful in getting my orientation a couple of times.? Saved tracks will let you reference where you have been so the next time you come here you can go right to unexplored areas of this vast forest floodplain.

I had a great time riding in the Vermillion River Bottoms and plan on returning again soon.? I like the fact that there is not really any set trails and it allows a rider to make their own while exploring this beautiful area.? Fat bike riders will have a field day here with all of the route possibilities available.

Do You Want To Be A Mall Santa This Season? - Retirement Homes

The holiday season is barely two months away, and for many, it can be a stressful time full of shopping in packed malls, shorter days and snowfall.

But if you enjoy the festive season, have you ever considered making a little extra money off the holidays?

So if you?re looking for an encore career after retirement, or just looking to do something fun and bring in some extra cash, plenty of malls are looking for their short-term resident Santa Claus, according to a recent article on AARP.org.

?Last year, retailers added just over 660,000 workers. This year, that figure could approach 700,000,? retail expert John A. Challenger told the news outlet.

AARP offers a few tips to help you find temporary seasonal work:

1/ Keep an open mind: It?s not just mall Santas available in December; it can be anything from cashiers, salespeople and stockroom staff.

2/ Ask Around: Don?t just send out a resume. Ask your friends and family to keep an eye out for opportunities if they happen to come across anything.

3/ Ask where you buy: During a slow time of day, go over to the mall and ask at local stores where you?ve purchased recently, or regularly. If you?re a familiar face, you might have a better chance to pick up a part-time job if one becomes available.

iPod touch 5 unboxing and hardware tour

Apple's new iPod touch 5 makes the already nearly 2-dimensional iPhone 5 look thick by comparison, but we knew that already. Now that they've finally hit stores in all their multi-colored, looped up glory, we can finally get a good look at everything else.

In addition to Darth Vader black and Storm Trooper White, I picked up an Imperial Guard red and Leanna got a Max Rebo blue. (I'm still waiting on my Yoda green nano!) They all look great, at least fresh out of the package. The loop is the only slight let down. It's leathery, which is nice, but thin and, at least to my eyes, not very Apple-like. Something like the old iPod lanyard might have been a better choice.

We'll be back soon with a full review, but in the meantime, here's the unboxing and the hardware tour.

[App Fridays] Hike; A Truly Complete Messaging App

Messaging apps for communication between smartphones was something that I never bought when whatsapp was first introduced. A couple of weeks later, I was spending about 2-3 hours a day on it religiously ?whatsapping? people. This App based instant messaging is an extension of the equally addictive desktop IM?s, but with mobility, people?s levels of accessibility has reached unprecedented levels!

But most of these smartphone IM apps can be used only between smartphones. What about those who do not have smartphones? Today?s App Friday has solved one end of this problem. Hike is an instant messaging app which allows smartphone users communicate with other smartphone users with the app via IM and also communicate with non smartphone users via SMS.

After having spent two weeks with this app, here?s the app friday review of Hike

Function

It is a communication app. Its a hybrid IM and an SMS app (Think Way2SMS, only on mobile), giving the user the following use cases

1) Communicate with other smartphones with Hike (IM)
2) Communicate with other smartphones without Hike (SMS)
3) Communicate with any phone (SMS)

This basically makes it a complete messaging app. The Hike to Hike communication via IM has features, such as group chat and photo and video sharing, which are right up there with any top smart IM app.

The app provides 100 free SMS?s with the app and provides free SMSs for users that promote the app through its use.

?

?

Effectiveness

We measured Hike?s effectiveness on its use cases. Here are some key points that I think you should know -

1) Communicate with other smartphones with Hike (IM) ? Almost instantaneous over a stable Internet connection. Group chat works pretty well and so does the image and video transfer (Speeds dependent on Internet connection)

2) Communicate with other smartphones without Hike (SMS) ? The SMS reach the recipient slightly later than a conventional SMS over a stable internet connection. 100 free messages a month and 50 free SMS?s if your recipient joins Hike!

3) Communicate with any phone (SMS) ? Same as above, along with a small note after message about Hike. Don?t annoy people too much with Hike, as recipients are given a code which can block you.

All in all, pretty effective.

Innovation

Hike?s endeavor to be a complete messaging app is commendable and they way they?ve gone about doing this for India is innovative. By making Hike as a SMS and IM hybrid, it can actually be a good replacement for the conventional messaging app as well. With increased Internet penetration in smartphones, the stock messaging app can also include an IM service, which Hike has already paved the path for. I have already started using Hike as a primary messaging app.

I don?t know if this classes as innovation, but they?ve invested some design time in their smilies. I assure you, these will be the most adorable smilies that you?d have ever seen and its definitely not something that I?ve ever seen before.

Battery Performance ? By Little Eye Labs

The power consumption of ?hike? is quite consistent with what we would expect from similar apps. The usage of CPU and network is very sporadic and quite light with respect to its battery consumption.

The MP10 report for ?hike? as expected from the testing, and was quite good. According to the tests (and considering only CPU and Wifi usage into account), the app will on an average drain 10% of the battery (of a standard 1400mah capacity) in ~11 hours.

?

This is great for an app that runs in the background for a smartphone.

UI and UX

Clean. That is the first word that comes to mind when you use Hike. It follows a conversation layout for messages, which is the norm in a smartphone and its white and bluish colour scheme is very pleasing to the eye.

The in app functionalities are very minimal. It has a list view of your previous conversations and add conversation button to your address book. As simple as that. Conventional gestures such as long press etc have been included into the app with corresponding options that a smartphone user will expect.

After using Hike, you?ll actually miss the experience that it provides with any other app.

What we liked

This is a great messaging app. Here?s what we liked about it specifically -

1) One of the best user interfaces and a easy user experience; very short learning curve and as a user, I?m used to it! (Love the smilies)

2) SMS functionality is not better than the stock SMS, but use it long enough and it being the complete app that it is, its something that you wouldn?t mind putting up with.

What we didn?t like

It does have some things that could have been done without -

1) The SMS reply is at STD rates for Hike messages. Where Hike encourages users to send SMSs from the app, it discourages recipients to reply back to it.

(Developer Clarification, ?Hike doesn?t charge the users, the Network Provider does?)

2) SMS messages sent from Hike has a postscript about the app. This is understandable, but its slightly long. Kind of spammy.

Last words

I have tried to be as unbiased as I can, and I really can?t get over how brilliant the app is. The app is a pleasure to use and it does what it says. Some minor issues aside, this app is a must have for every smartphone user. I personally feel that Hike could be the future of the stock messaging app as well. Most smartphones have internet connectivity and Hike has shown that SMS and IM services from the same app provides a compelling use case. But until that day comes, use Hike.

Hike is available for Android and is coming soon for other platforms. You can download the app here.

(AP) ? Myanmar has signed a deal with a British aviation enthusiast to allow the excavation of a World War II treasure: dozens of Spitfire fighter planes buried by the British almost 70 years ago.

Aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall discovered the locations of the aircraft after years of searching. The planes are believed to be in good condition, since they were reportedly packed in crates and hidden by British forces to keep them out of the hands of invading Japanese.

The British Embassy said Wednesday that the agreement was reached after discussions between President Thein Sein and British Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit to Myanmar earlier this year.

The excavation of the rare planes is slated to begin by the end of October.

The Myanma Ahlin daily reported that the excavation agreement was signed Tuesday by Director General of Civil Aviation Tin Naing Tun, Cundall on behalf of his British company DJC, and Htoo Htoo, managing director of Cundall's Myanmar partner, the Shwe Taung Paw company.

"It took 16 years for Mr. David Cundall to locate the planes buried in crates. We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," Htoo Htoo Zaw said.

"This will be the largest number of Spitfires in the world," he said. "We want to let people see those historic fighters, and the excavation of these fighter planes will further strengthen relations between Myanmar and Britain."

The British Embassy described the agreement as a chance to work with Myanmar's new reformist government "in uncovering, restoring, displaying these fighter planes."

"We hope that many of them will be gracing the skies of Britain and as discussed, some will be displayed here in Burma," said an embassy spokesman, using the old name for Myanmar.

Myanmar has since last the past year turned away from many of the repressive policies of the previous military government and patched up relations with Western nations that had previously shunned it.

Myanma Ahlin cited Transport Minister Nyan Tun Aung saying the agreement was a milestone strengthening the friendly relationship between Myanmar and Britain and amounts to the British government's recognition of the democratic reforms of President Thein Sein's new government.

Cundall has said his quest to find the planes involved 12 trips to Myanmar and the expenditure of more than 130,000 pounds ($210,000).

With Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen fight on the horizon, fighters wonder if smack tack prowess is more important

Chael Sonnen is a good fighter, but he's a masterful smack talker. There is no one in the UFC, including president Dana White, who can sell a fighter better than middleweight-challenger-turned-light-heavyweight-challenger Chael Sonnen. He proved that as he goaded UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones into a season coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" and a title fight.

It didn't matter that Jones had a more qualified contender waiting in Dan Henderson, or that Forrest Griffin was already preparing for his December bout with Sonnen. The fight went to Sonnen, the man who could pull in the biggest ratings on a stale show and the biggest dollars on a pay-per-view.

This has fighters wondering if they should be in the gym training or at an improv class, working on their smack talking skills. Henderson tweeted:

I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to [expletive] talking school.?@danawhite

Griffin wondered the same when talking to "UFC Tonight."

"I'm not mad at him," Griffin said, referencing Sonnen. "Why fight your way to the top when you can talk your way to the top?"

Who can blame them? They've worked for years in the gym and in fights to get the fights they wanted, but a middleweight stepped in front of him because of his mouth. On a press Wednesday, White said it made sense.

"Basically Jon Jones is out until April. He's going to be sitting around for months anyway unable to fight. So it made sense for him to do The Ultimate Fighter. And everyone has been talking about this fight with Chael so it made sense for them to do TUF and then fight," White said.

Hear that? White said the fight was made because people were talking about it, not because Sonnen earned it. Every fighter on the UFC's payroll should take notice. Talking will earn you a fight when your skills cannot.
