Kids' Choice Awards 2012: 5 Things We're Dying To See

Katy Perry and One Direction's performances, Will Smith's hosting skills and more have us pumped for Saturday night.

This year's Kids' Choice Awards are going to be as action-packed as ever, with Will Smith as host, two killer performers lined up and a slew of celebrities expected to be in attendance.

Here are the five things we're looking forward to during the live show at 8 p.m. Saturday:

Katy Perry's Performance
Perry is not only one of this year's top nominees, but the "Teenage Dream" singer will also take the stage at USC's Galen Center to present and perform. So what song will she sing? What will she wear? Will her hair still be blue? One of Perry's biggest hits, "Firework," is up for Favorite Song. She is also nominated for Favorite Female Singer and Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie for her role in "The Smurfs."

A Host With Big Willie Style
Nickelodeon hit the jackpot of high-profile celeb hosts in landing Will Smith for their master of ceremonies this year. Although he's one of the biggest stars around, it's been awhile since we've seen the former Fresh Prince. We've seen a lot of his son Jaden and daughter Willow, who are becoming big stars in their own right, but we are psyched to see what Smith has planned as host. Will he be joined onstage by his kids? Will he incorporate a few of his famous friends into the act, like Tom Cruise? Will we get a sneak peek at new footage from the upcoming "Men in Black III"? We'll have to wait and see.

One Direction Break Hearts Stateside
The cute and charming lads of "it" boy band One Direction will no doubt bring the house down with whatever they perform on the show. A word of advice to the lucky folks attending the show: Think about bringing earplugs to protect yourself from the enthusiastic, high-pitched screams that will take over the Galen Center the instant the British pop group takes the stage. And they're not taking the opportunity lightly. "Kids' Choice is the biggest night on Nickelodeon," Niall Horan told MTV News about the magnitude of their appearance on the show. "All the big stars are going to be there, and when we found out it was just us and Katy Perry performing, we were like, 'Geez, this is a big deal.' "

An Appearance By a First Lady
Talk about upping the style and class factor! The fact that the very well-respected FLOTUS will be on hand to present Taylor Swift with an award is a really big deal. Michelle Obama will honor Swift with the Big Help Award, in recognition of her philanthropic efforts, including work with U.S. tornado and flood survivors. Obama herself was the recipient of the award in 2010, in recognition of her Let's Move! Campaign, which champions healthier lifestyles for kids. And, as if that weren't enough to establish her Nick cred, earlier this year, Obama also appeared on a special episode of "iCarly" to promote her Joining Forces initiative to support military families.

Who Will Get Slimed?
On to the most intriguing and entertaining part of the annual awards show: Who will get slimed? Despite the sticky, icky and total-mess factor that is involved with being covered from head to toe in the network's trademark green slime, it is considered an honor to get hit with the goo, which is said to be a mixture of green Jell-O, shampoo, oatmeal and flour. The illustrious list of previously slimed celebs includes: Katy Perry, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Justin Timberlake, the Jonas Brothers, Jackson Rathbone and Russell Brand. So who's going down this year? Traditionally, the host is a prime target toward the end of the show, so we can probably count on seeing Smith covered in green, but who else? Maybe Perry or one of the presenters — Chris Rock, Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Zac Efron, Victoria Justice, Big Time Rush or Cee Lo Green.

The Battle For the Bialystoker: More Community Perspectives | The ...

Last week,? we filed a brief report after Community Board 3?s landmarks subcommittee voted in favor of protecting the Bialystoker Nursing Home building, at 228 East Broadway.? Today ? a more detailed account from the public hearing, which offered the most detailed explanation yet from nursing home board members about their decision to close the Lower East Side institution after 80 years and to sell the building as a development site.

Shortly after the home closed last year, preservationists filed an application with the city to designate the 1929 Beaux Arts building an historic landmark.? The nursing home board opposed this move, arguing that landmarking would scare off prospective buyers.? The Landmarks Preservation Commission has not announced whether it intends to ?calendar? the application and schedule a public hearing on the matter.? Community activists hoped an endorsement from the CB3 would compel the commission to act.

Last Tuesday evening, the nursing home?s public relations firm (Geto & deMilly) handed out a statement from the board of trustees spelling out its position.? The statement made the argument that landmarking would deprive the nursing home?s union and other creditors of millions of dollars they are owed:

As part of its state-approved closure plan, the Bialystoker Board is now attempting to raise the $13+ million in capital that will allow it to honor its obligations to the nursing home?s 115 loyal employees with respect to past due wages, benefits and pension funding. It is also the Board?s goal to reimburse our vendors, many of which are local businesses, as well as remit remaining taxes and funds owed to Medicaid. These obligations have real-life implications for the working families depending on this compensation, and for local businesses that cannot afford such a loss. However, the $13+ million needed to make good on these obligations can only come from the sale of the site? The Bialystoker Board is now in the process of entering into a contract of sale to the highest bidder. The sale has been approved by the Attorney General? If this building were to be designated a landmark, options for its adaptive reuse would be severely limited (due to its narrow configuration and advanced disrepair)? Thus it could only be sold at a significant discount, which would likely thrust Bialystoker into bankruptcy and ensure that our deserving employees will not receive the full amount of compensation owed to them.

Preservationists in attendance countered the nursing home?s arguments from a variety of perspectives. First off, they said it?s shortsighted to tear down a building that not only has architectural significance but is also symbolic of the Jewish experience on the Lower East Side. Elissa Sampson, a longtime LES resident, argued that the Bialystoker building is ?representative of immigrant labor in every sense.?? Immigrant workers (almost all of whom worked in the garment industry) paid $10 per brick to build the home.

Mitchell Grubler, a leader of Friends of the Bialystoker Home,? detailed several government programs that could be used to help pay for the building?s renovation and made the case that preservation does not necessarily mean financial ruin.? Eric Mandelbaum, the president of the neighboring Seward park Cooperative, also spoke in favor of saving the building (he was speaking only for himself, not the co-op board).

Leah Gonzalez,? representing the union, 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, acknowledged that? the Bialystoker ?is clearly a beloved building.? But she went on to urge community board members to ?give serious consideration to the impact (on preservation) on our workers, all of whom are unemployed (several months after the nursing home?s closure).?? Gonzalez said the union is owed about $4 million in back wages and benefits. In opposing preservation, she said, ?we are not left with a lot of options.?

At least two Bialystoker board members were present at the meeting, including Gary Ambrose, who offered a detailed account of the home?s financial woes.? The closure, he said, ?broke my heart.?? Ten years ago, he indicated, the board was advised to close the home, but they were determined to keep it going.? In the end, he told CB3 members, the Bialystoker was losing $1 million a month.?? The building had become dangerous to both residents and employees.? Ambrose said an intensive search was begun for a ?white knight,? but no one would touch it? if the building was landmarked. He estimated that the winning bid was around $17 million.? Alys Kremer, another longtime board member, implored the community board not to ?put buildings before people.? She added, ?I urge you to be unsentimental about this.?

Preservationists have often pointed to the Bialystoker?s facade, which includes etchings depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Nursing home board has suggested these and other design elements could be removed and preserved before the building is demolished.? But David Adams, a Community Board member and observant Jew, argued that people are making too much of the Bialystoker?s historic significance.

?It?s not that significant or unique,? he said. Adams elaborated, suggesting that it?s better to ?live in the present day,? adding that ?making monuments to the past is not what we?re about.? We?re about the future.?? Adams also suggested the nursing home board members, who he said ?come from my community,? explored every possibility.

In the end, Adams was the only community board member to vote against the resolution, which called on the Landmarks Commission to ?promptly calendar and landmark the Bialystoker Nursing Home building.?? Next month, CB3?s Parks Committee will vote on the resolution before its forwarded to the full board at the end of April.

As we reported last week, the State Attorney General?s office would not confirm it has approved the sale of the Bialystoker. Nursing home representatives did not indicate whether the real estate contract gives the prospective buyer an ?out? if the building is landmarked in the weeks or months ahead.?? Other parties ? who are thinking in terms of renovating the Bialystoker rather than demolishing it ? are waiting in the wings. They have, however, made it clear they could not pay ?top dollar? for a building that has landmark status and would require millions to rehab. One non-profit organization, Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, tried to contact representatives of the Bialystoker about possibly creating affordable housing in the building.? Their overtures were rebuffed.

City Council member Margaret Chin has been in contact with both preservationists and the Bialystoker board, in an effort to find a solution to the dilemma. State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has declined to weigh on on the issue, but has told community activists that he might take a position if the community board passes its resolution next month.

Sony pulls another game from PlayStation Store after new Vita exploit found

Sony's withdrawn Everybody's Tennis from the PlayStation Store after discovering it could be used to hack the PS Vita. The game was was pulled without warning (probably to the consternation of tennis fans) as the company attempts to keep absolute control on its new platform. It's the second title to get the treatment after hacker Wololo discovered an exploit in Motorstorm Arctic Edge that allowed the Vita Half-Byte-loader to be launched on the device. It looks like the game of cat-and-mouse between massive corporation and a single individual will continue for a while, with Wololo claiming they've got access to around 10 more undiscovered exploits. Popcorn, anyone?

Mexican parties don't meet women candidate quotas

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Two of Mexico's three largest political parties have said they have not been able to comply with a legal requirement to reserve 40 percent of their congressional candidacies for women, electoral authorities said Saturday.

The position taken by the governing National Action Party, the former ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party and the smaller Green party were the latest chapter in a decade-long struggle to increase women's participation in Mexican politics.

The announcement comes, ironically, as President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party is the country's first major political party to nominate a female candidate for the presidency. Josefina Vazquez Mota is running No. 2 in opinion polls, but generally trails the Institutional Revolutionary Party's candidate by about 10 points.

Leonardo Valdes, the president of Mexico's federal electoral institute, said the three parties had notified him Thursday and Friday that they couldn't meet the requirement.

Valdes said the parties could face "various legal consequences that would affect their participation" in July 1 presidential, senatorial and congressional elections, but did not specify what those consequences might be.

Federal Electoral law says authorities can refuse to register slates of candidates that don't include enough women.

However, the three parties argue that they filled some of their candidacies by primary votes and note that another legal provision exempts candidacies selected in that manner from the gender quota.

Mexico's other large party, the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, appeared ready to comply with the quota.

Mexican parties have struggled to comply with at least the letter of the law since gender requirements were first enacted a decade ago.

Last week, five dealers around the country agreed to settle complaints brought by the Federal Trade Commission that they did not ?pay off? trade-in vehicles with negative equity as promised in their advertisements.?

?The dealers actually rolled the amount of the negative equity into the loan package for the new vehicle,? says FTC attorney Malini Mithal. ?So you were ultimately responsible for paying off your trade, not the dealer.?

The dealers named in the government?s complaints are: 1) Billion Auto of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 2) Frank Myers AutoMaxx of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; 3) Key Hyundai of Manchester in Vernon, Connecticut; 4) Hyundai of Milford,? Connecticut, and? 5) and Ramey Motors of Princeton, West Virginia.

In settling with the government, the dealers do not admit doing anything wrong. But they promise not to make this sort of deceptive representation in the future.?

Taliban talks off; Karzai tells NATO to pull back

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The American campaign in Afghanistan has suffered a double blow: The Taliban broke off talks with the U.S., and President Hamid Karzai said NATO should pull out of rural areas and speed up the transfer of security responsibilities to Afghan forces nationwide in the wake of the killing of 16 civilians.

Thursday's moves represent new setbacks to America's strategy for ending the 10-year-old war at a time when support for the conflict is plummeting. Part of the U.S. exit strategy is to transfer authority gradually to Afghan forces. Another tack is to pull the Taliban into political discussions with the Afghan government, though it's unclear that there has been any progress since January.

Although Karzai has previously said that he wanted international troops to transition out of rural areas, the apparent call for an immediate exit is new. Karzai also said he now wants Afghan forces to take the lead for countrywide security in 2013, in what appeared to be a move to push the U.S. toward an earlier drawdown.

A statement released by Karzai's office said that during his meeting with visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, the president "requested that the international forces come out of Afghan villages and stay in their bases."

Karzai also said that the "Afghan security forces have the ability to provide security in the villages of our country," the statement said.

But a senior U.S. official said Karzai did not make any demands to have U.S. troops leave villages immediately. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose details of a private meeting, said it's unclear that the U.S. would be able to pull all of its troops out of the villages even by 2013. He noted that the U.S. plans to continue counterterrorism operations and advising the Afghan forces around the country.

A rapid pullout from rural areas would have a devastating effect on U.S. ability to challenge the Taliban on the battlefield.

Unlike the Iraq war, where most combat was in towns and cities, the Afghan conflict is a struggle to secure rural hamlets and remote mountain valleys used by the militants to move in and out of sanctuaries in neighboring Pakistan.

It would essentially mean the end of the strategy of trying to win hearts and minds by working with and protecting the local populations.

Karzai is known for making dramatic demands and then backing off under U.S. pressure. The call for a pullback ? even if aimed at his domestic audience ? will likely become another issue of contention between the Afghans and their international allies at a time of growing war weariness in the United States and other countries of the international coalition.

Karzai spoke as Afghan lawmakers were expressing outrage that the U.S. flew the soldier suspected of gunning down 16 civilians early Sunday in two Afghan villages to Kuwait on Wednesday night. They were demanding that the suspect, a U.S. Army staff sergeant, be tried in the country.

A Seattle, Washington, lawyer said Thursday that he has been hired to represent the soldier, a 38-year-old father of two young children. The lawyer, John Henry Browne, said soldiers in the suspect's camp had been very upset that somebody in their unit had been "gravely injured" a day before the rampage.

The soldier is from Seattle area, but Browne and the Army have refused to give his name.

"Everybody is worried about the safety of his family, and I am honoring that," Browne said.

Browne said his client is highly decorated, had twice been injured during tours in Iraq and was reluctant to leave on his fourth deployment. He denied reports suggesting that the soldier had alcohol or marital problems.

Browne said the soldier asked that he represent him. He once represented serial killer Ted Bundy, and more recently helped negotiate plea deals for Colton Harris-Moore, a youthful thief known as the "Barefoot Bandit" who gained international attention as he stole airplanes, boats and cars during a two-year run from the law.

Browne said he will travel to wherever the soldier is being held. He also will have at least one military lawyer.

Asked if Karzai's request was a response to the shooting spree, Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai said that Karzai had long asked that military operations cease in rural areas because that's not where terrorism is rooted. But he added: "The shootings were an unforgivable act of murder in Kandahar. It's just one other argument for why Afghan soldiers should increasingly lead when it comes to Afghan people in the villages."

Afghan security forces know "a thousand times better than any foreign troops the culturally sensitive ways of dealing with their own people," the spokesman said.

A NATO soldier died Thursday in a roadside bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan, said the coalition. The statement released Friday did not provided further details, nor the nationality of the casualty.

The American accused of killing the civilians was stationed on just such a rural base, where a small group of soldiers worked with villagers to try to set up local defense forces and strengthen government. The accused soldier, who has not been named, is suspected of going on a shooting rampage in villages near his base in southern Afghanistan, killing nine children and seven other civilians and then burning some of their bodies.

Karzai told Panetta that everything must be done to prevent any such incidents in the future, including speeding up timelines for NATO pullbacks.

The meeting took place a day after President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron said in Washington that they and their NATO allies were committed to shifting to a support role in Afghanistan in 2013 ? a year earlier than scheduled.

Obama gave his fullest endorsement yet for the mission shift, but he said the overall plan to gradually withdraw forces and hand over security in Afghanistan will stand.

Despite the Taliban statement that it was suspending talks with the U.S., White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday that the U.S. continues to support an Afghan-led process toward reconciliation. He said U.S. terms for participation in that process by the Taliban have not changed.

In the statement, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid accused the U.S. of failing to follow through on its promises, making new demands and falsely claiming that the militant group had entered into multilateral negotiations.

Mujahid said they had agreed to discuss two issues with the Americans: the establishment of the militant group's political office in Qatar and a prisoner exchange. The Taliban are seeking the release of five top Taliban leaders from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The Taliban said the Americans initially agreed to take practical steps on these issues, but then "turned their backs on their promises" and came up with new conditions for the talks.

"So the Islamic Emirate has decided to suspend all talks with Americans taking place in Qatar from today onwards until the Americans clarify their stance on the issues concerned and until they show willingness in carrying out their promises instead of wasting time," Mujahid said. The Taliban refers to itself as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Karzai said last month that the U.S., the Afghan government and the Taliban held three-way talks aimed at moving toward a political settlement of the war.

The Taliban denied this and said talking with the Afghan government was "pointless."

Michael Semple, a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard's Kennedy School who has been following the discussions, said the Taliban's decision was driven by a U.S. failure to follow through on the prisoner transfer from Guantanamo and Washington's insistence that the militant group engage with Karzai.
