Part 2 ? The Yoghurt Story ? Retail range.?After Perridge Farm had been selling organic milk for a couple of years the price per litre collapsed, due to oversupply ? entering the milk processing chain seemed the only viable option. Brown Cow?s venture into milk processing started with ??pasteurisation of milk on a small scale for a local campsite to sell. This was for the summer months but it was neither interesting nor profitable, due to their production facilities being too small.? So ever the entrepreneur Judith Freane started producing organic yoghurt under the Brown Cow Organics name ? artisan produced on their farm using organic whole milk ? from their own Guernsey herd born raised and grazed on their farm organic acres- and natural and organic ingredients without artificial colours, additives or preservatives (and GMO free.)? From the very first batch she realised it was an amazingly good product selling into top London stores within weeks of its initial production.
The beef indirectly then led to the birth of River Cottage yoghurt; Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall asked Judith if he could have a sample of beef sent down to try? They did ? he loved it -then he went to Brown Cow clutching a pot of ice cream with an idea; could they manufacture ice cream for River Cottage? Whilst willing to give it a try, Judith and Clive asked if he had tasted their yoghurt? Hugh hadn?t, when he did he was so impressed the idea of River Cottage yoghurt was conceived. ??Hugh and his top chef Gill worked closely with Judith developing recipes for the seasonal fruit on the bottom range and more recently the organic pannacotta which was awarded a gold star in the 2011 Great Taste Awards.
The Brown Cow Organics dairy range and River Cottage yoghurts and panna-cotta (both produced by Brown Cow Organics) are marketed to the consumer via retail stockists online and independent retailers, deli?s, cafes, specialist food stores & health food stores and at events and markets they themselves attend.? They also provide bulk yoghurt to catering establishments, restaurants, schools, sports clubs and hotels.
Yoghurt Story ? Hospitality range
Now in March 2012 Brown Cow Organics have launched a 100ml size organic yoghurt range specifically for the Hospitality Industry.? In screw top glass jars with tamper-proof labelling the yoghurts are perfect for breakfast service, room service, light desserts, afternoon teas and even as a mini bar snack.? Produced using the same method as their retail yoghurt this luscious, sumptuous yoghurt is available in cases of 18 x 100ml jars.? There is plenty of choice of case types, establishments can order whole cases of any single flavour from the range or elect to take one, either or both from the two mixed cases on offer. ?Mixed cases are ?Classic Collection? (Honey, Vanilla & Natural) or ?Fruit Collection?- organic fruit compote topped with organic natural yoghurt (Apricot, Blueberry, and Strawberry).
Hand processed and poured into recyclable, re-usable British glass jars Brown Cow Organics artisan process produces naturally thick rich yoghurt without using emulsifiers, stabilisers or thickeners.? Ingredients are totally natural, non-homogenised, contain only 5% fat and are rich in Omega 3s and other trace elements. The full Hospitality range can be seen on their website from 2nd week of March and they are distributing the range primarily through wholesalers; enquiries from interested wholesalers and distributors are welcome.
Cow Hide
Judith has also been quietly producing beautiful handbags, luggage and accessories from their Guernsey Cow Hides (a by-product of their beef) for the last couple of years, along with selling the unique hides themselves as rugs or wall hangings.? In November 2011 Brown Cow launched a range of cow hide mule slippers too and began marketing the whole Cow Hide range as their Fashion & Interiors Collection.? The Fashion & Interiors Collection is produced in Somerset and hand-fashioned from the selection of long or short haired hides in a variety of natural hide colours ? ensuring each piece is as individual and unique as the animal they came from. Interior designers to the Hospitality industry can select from the Brown Cow Interiors Collection in the knowledge that they are furnishing with British ethically produced goods that are from an exclusive collection ? and when choosing hides for rugs or wall-hangings knowing each hide is totally unique.
Ethics
Judith & Clive Freane are passionate about the ethics, quality, providence and sustainability of ALL of the food produce and cow hide products that come from their organic farm; this can be clearly seen by the exceptional quality of their beef and yoghurts and the lustre of their hides.? Achieved through the ever evolving healthy organic balanced diet and organic pastures grazed by their herd -the excellent produce is a true reflection of the high level of nutrition and animal welfare standards adopted by Brown Cow Organics; of which they are justifiably very proud.
Awards?????
In the last 2 years they have won no less than 14 awards for their organic beef and dairy products, one being the for the Taste of Somerset Harmsworth Award for Outstanding Contribution to Food in Somerset ? An award that recognises an individual or company that has put Somerset on the map with inspiration, energy, imagination and use of Somerset ingredients.
