College football preview: TU, OU, OSU players with something to prove

Trey Metoyer, So., WR

The sophomore wide receiver had large expectations entering 2012, but ended with only 17 catches for 148 yards. His production grinded to a halt in the season's final 10 games, when the former Rivals five-star recruit only had seven receptions. OU coach Bob Stoops expects this season to be different. "Trey definitely feels a lot more comfortable in what he needs to do, what we're asking him to do. I feel like he's exhibited more confidence in doing that. We believe he has a chance to have a really big year."

Justin Gilbert, Sr., CB

Gilbert's junior season could have been a farewell tour.

The cornerback capped his sophomore season by being named defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl. He appeared poised for the kind of 2012 season that would result in him leaving school early for the NFL.

Instead, Gilbert endured an interceptionless season and decided to return to Stillwater for a do-over. So far, so good. He had two interceptions in the spring game.

"Gilbert needs to play well this year," coach Mike Gundy said at the Big 12 Media Days. "Justin didn't play very good last year, but he certainly has the capability."

Jack Jewell, Sr., DT

After three seasons at the University of Tulsa, Jack Jewell's body of work amounts to this: He has appeared in nine games and was credited with a combined total of 11 tackles. Now a 6-foot-5, 287-pound senior, Jewell is expected to start at defensive tackle. He performed well during the spring, but can Jewell stay healthy and consistently make plays? A former Norman High School star, he returns to Norman when the Golden Hurricane visits Oklahoma on Sept. 14. It's a big assignment for such an inexperienced guy.

"During the spring, he gave me a lot of reason to be hopeful," Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship said. "But he is an unproven commodity. Frankly, he's still got a lot of work to do in summer school - the kind of work that has me sitting here, checking text messages."

Three storylines: TU football

Linebacker Shawn Jackson and safety Marco Nelson return as two of the elite defenders in Conference USA, but otherwise the Hurricane defense is almost completely rebuilt. Coaches express confidence in a cornerback rotation that should include Dwight Dobbins, Darnell Walker Jr. and Darrell Williams.
