ROCKLAND, Maine ? A 36-year-old Rockland man who is on the sex offender registry is accused of attacking another man with a baseball bat after being called names.
Samuel Sanchez was arrested Sunday and charged with Class A elevated aggravated assault, according to Rockland Deputy Police Chief Wally Tower.
Police were called to the Brunswick Rooms apartments on Main Street shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday, the deputy chief said. The victim was another male resident of the apartments who was taken by Rockland ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
The victim suffered a concussion and cuts and bruises to his head, according to an affidavit filed by Rockland police in Rockland District Court. Tower said he has heard that the victim has since been released from the hospital.
Sanchez is being held at the Knox County Jail in Rockland on $50,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon in Rockland District Court.
According to the affidavit, Sanchez said he struck the victim repeatedly following a verbal altercation. Sanchez told police that the victim and the victim?s girlfriend had been loud the night before and he had confronted him about it. Sanchez also told the officer that the victim had also been calling Sanchez derogatory names, according to the affidavit. One of the names was a derogatory term for hispanics. Sanchez is hispanic.
Sanchez said the victim also had been calling him an offensive name for being a sex offender, the affidavit states.
Sanchez also was charged with violating a condition of release. According to the sex offender registry maintained by the Maine Department of Public Safety, Sanchez was convicted in 2009 of lewd or lascivious battery on a victim 12-15 years old in Florida and is a lifetime registrant of the sex offender list.
