CHARLOTTE?The annual "24 hours of booty" ride made its way around Myers Park in Charlotte on Saturday.
For a full day, more than 1,200 Charlotte area cycling enthusiasts bike around what's known as ?The Booty Loop? in Myers Park to raise money for cancer research.
?People ride as far as their inspiration takes them? said Basil Lyberg of 24 Hours of Booty.??
Proceeds from the ride benefit the the Levine Cancer Institute. To date, they've raised more than $10,000,000 for cancer research.
?Its inspiring, just the riders and the passion from which they come. They've been deeply impacted by cancer and this is a way that they can honor their loved ones or a way that they can support someone that's going through chemotherapy right now? said Lyberg.?
The other beneficiary of the event is the LiveStrong Foundation. Co-founded by Lance Armstrong, this is the first ride since the disgraced former cycling star admitted to doping. Organizers say Armstrong's fall from grace hasn't had an impact on the turnout at the ride.
?Cancer is still impacting people, so they make the distinction between Lance Armstrong the cyclist and LiveStrong Foundation and the work they're doing to support survivors. And it is important work and our riders see that? said Lyberg.
Cancer survivors taking part in the event say it is about far more than cycling. They come back year after year to celebrate their recovery.?
?It is one of the most wonderful inversions that I've ever experienced in my life? said Bryan Shields, a two-time cancer survivor.?
?Its not about the distance. It is about the quality of the ride and its about the camaraderie that I have which is what I love about Booty. It doesn't matter how many years out you are. It still feels good? said Shannon Carney, another cancer survivor who hast been participating in 24 Hours of Booty for several years.?
